Power is essential to run your RV, but not all appliances can depend on your vehicle’s battery. Otherwise, they are bound to drain it of its power easily. For this reason, you need to consider having a high-quality RV generator on board. This type of power source is specifically designed for RVs, so you can count on it to run the appliances and heating and cooling systems of your vehicle. Purchasing an RV generator can be confusing when you have no idea where to start or what factors to consider. So, consider these four things as your guide:

  • Uses – Think about how you want to use the RV generator. What appliances do you want it to run? While it is often used for that purpose, it can also be used to charge the RV’s house battery bank. However, it is more recommended to use the generator to deliver power to your electrical outlets where your small appliances can be plugged.
  • Types of generators – There are three different types of RV generators, and they are classified according to fuel. To save you from confusion, consider picking a unit that runs on fuel similar to the one of your RV uses. Diesel can be a good choice if you want more power and a cleaner burn. It is safe to store, too, but some older units may be noisier and may add more weight to your vehicle. Gas is widely available, but it burns fast and is highly flammable.

Liquid propane is environmentally friendly due to its cleaner emissions. Its shelf life is longer, so you do not have to replace unused fuel as often as you would with other fuel types. It can be practical if you typically go on extended trips, but keep in mind that their run time is limited to tank size, which can be inconvenient if you run out of LPG when you are in the middle of nowhere. Power output may be minimal than gas and diesel, too.

  • The size – The size of your RV generator should be based on the wattage of your RV’s air-conditioning system, as it is the appliance that will require most of the power. Consider a product with wattage on the high end of the air conditioner’s starting watt range. For instance, if the A/C is of 2500 to 2800W, go for a 3000W generator.
  • The brand – Consider the brand of the RV generator and choose only those that are popular and will easily have service and replacement parts around the country.
