The pet industry has a dark side. While you may think that some respectable breeders sell healthy animals but many of them are abusive. You can counter this abuse on animals by adopting pets from local shelters. People abandon their pets for a number of different reasons including divorce, financial issues, and etc. None of this has to anything with the pet’s temperament and health. Whether you are looking for a mixed breed or purebred, a young pup or an older dog, your nearest local shelter have the companion that you’re looking for. Here are few reasons why you should consider adopting a pet:

  • Adopting a dog can actually save a life. More than 2.7 million pets are euthanized in America just because there is no more room to provide them shelter and very few people choose to adopt pets. If you decide to adopt pets from local shelter, you will be making a dramatic impact on those pets being euthanized.
  • Adopting a dog from a local shelter will give you a dog that is happy and is waiting for someone to take it home. Most pets that end up in a local shelter are usually abandoned by their former owners and it is none of the pet’s mistake itself. These pets are also housetrained and are used to living around families.
  • Adopting a pet from pet shelter is much cheaper than buying a new pet. You will not have to spend your money on spay and vaccinations.
  • Let people know that you just adopted a pet. Ask them to adopt a pet for themselves also.
  • By adopting a pet, you fight the puppy mills. Puppy mills are essentially factory-style breeding welfare for dogs. If you ever visit a puppy mill, you’ll be shocked to see how dogs are housed in a poor housing condition with improper medication.
  • Animals provide unconditional love but more than that pets are psychologically, emotionally and physically beneficial to their companions. If you care for your pet, it can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment and also lessen the feelings of loneliness. By adopting a pet, you can also feel happy for saving a life.
  • Pet shelters, each year take in millions of stray, abused, and lost animals every year. By adopting these animals, you are making more space for others in the pet shelter. Not only does this give a chance for more animals to find shelter but the cost of adopting will also provide better care for those animals in the shelter.
  • Adopting a homeless animal will give a whole new life to them.
