What is Lasik?
Laser assisted in situ Keratomileusis is popularly known as Lasik, it is commonly called the laser vision correction surgery or simply the laser eye surgery. These types of surgery are used to cure the common vision problems like astigmatism, hypermetropia, or myopia. Ophthalmologists perform this surgery to reshape the cornea of an eye to improve the visual acuity of the patients. The Lasik surgery is considered as the best solution to get rid of the eye-glasses and the contact lenses. This procedure of laser vision correction is somewhat similar to PRK or LASEK surgeries.
The introduction of this kind of eye vision correction surgery can be traced way back in the decade of 1950s. Techniques like Keratomieusis and Microkeratome can be called the earliest inspirations of this Lasik technology. Jose Barraquer, a Spanish ophthalmologist can be called the father of laser correction eye surgery. His wor ks paved the way for Syyatoskav Fyodorov, a Russian scientist to develop the Radial Keratotomy technique during the period of 1970s. He is also credited to design the phakic intraocular lens during the decade of 1980s. Later, the scientists like Rangaswamy Srinivasan and Steven Trokel worked a lot during 1980s on these techniques. Finally Marguerite MacDonald performed the very first laser eye surgery during 1989.
Various experimental techniques
As the time passes by, the LASIK technique improved a lot and now numerous experimental laser vision correction techniques are under practice. Some of them are
- Plain Lasik technologies like Epi-Lasik or Lasek
- Thin flap Lasik
- Wave-front guided PRK
- Intraocular lenses – advanced
- Femtosecond LASER intra-stromal vision correction surgeries like IntraCOR or FLIVC.
- Technolas FEMTEC laser.
Laser guided vision correction techniques have emerged as one of the most cost-effective solutions in the field of eye care. In fact, according to some doctors and scientists Laser technology is the future of surgical treatment. These types of surgical treatments are generally hassle-free and the patients can leave the hospital earlier. In fact, they are less painful and sometimes, these surgeries don’t give any pain to the patients. But before opting for such surgery you must consult with your doctor properly.
