If your washing machine has filled up with water and looks like it isn’t doing anything else, drum not turning this could happen on the wash cycle rinse cycle, but you will notice it more on the spin cycle, you may not sit and watch your washing machine so during the wash and rinse cycles it will not be as obvious, but you most certainly hear it spinning as this indicates it nearing the end of the wash and its getting close to removing the clothes.

There are a number of things that can cause the drum not to turn the most common ones I will run through with you in this article.

  1. There is something physically stopping the drum from turning this could be stuck between the drum and the outer tub, if you rotate the drum by hand you may feel this is tight and this could indicate you have something jammed, it could be a sock or another item of clothing.
  2. The belt could have snapped or could have worn and there is not enough tension so its slipping and no allowing the motor to turn the drum, on the older washing machines there used to be an adjustment on the motor bracket so you could take up the slack, but all modern washing machines are fitted with a stretch fit belt so you cannot adjust any slack out of them, these belts are tight and can be a little awkward to fit.
  3. The carbon brushes in your motor could have worn down this is the most common reason why the machines drum will not turn.

If the brushes have worn right down then they will need replacing if they are longer than a centimetre then they may not be the cause of the problem, an easy check for you to do is take the brushes out of the motor and inspect the ends of the brush that touches the commutator if the ends are shiny this would indicate the brushes are still making good conduct and may not be the cause of your problem, if one or both look sooty and black then that is a good indicator they need replacing, if they have worn unevenly then one may be sticking in the holder and will need further inspection to determine the reason why.
