Rising through the Ranks: The Evolution of Electronics Stores in Mumbai

The sprawling city of Mumbai has hundreds of electronics stores, to cater to consumers’ endless demand for ACs, TVs, laptops etc. Electronics stores in Mumbai were originally small family businesses with no well-known brand name, run by one or two people and a staff of 3-4 and they stocked limited items.

Today, electronics stores in Mumbai are large-scale showrooms with a huge selection of OLED TVs, smartphones, DSLRs, smart refrigerators and even digitally controlled kitchen appliances. The evolution from small, disorganized shops to enormous stores that stock everything was totally unprecedented.

The quality of service in electronics stores in Mumbai has improved greatly over the last two decades. Earlier it would take months to repair a television set, if at all. Now it only takes days. Modern retailers are highly organized and keep an inventory of spare parts or have a strong network of service centres.

Two good examples of electronics stores in Mumbai are Croma Retail and Kohinoor Electronics. Croma opened its first branch in 2006 and now runs over 110 stores in 19 cities across India. Kohinoor Electronics is one of the fastest growing electronics retailers, with 24 stores and counting, and an ecommerce portal that helps serve customers everywhere.

Until the 1990s, local consumers were always perplexed by electronics. They did not understand many features –for example, acronyms like ‘CRT’ and ‘TFT’ were rather confusing. The staff at electronics stores were also untrained and didn’t have much knowledge of what they were selling. They would just try to offload goods that fetched them higher profits. After the larger brands opened their retail outlets across Mumbai (and eventually the whole country), it became much easier for consumers to shop for exactly what they wanted. Trained salesmen who genuinely understand the customer’s needs, and guide them to purchase exactly what they want, are the biggest reason that most consumers love the experience of shopping at an electronics store in Mumbai today.

E-commerce is said to be the future, and it is surely becoming more popular every year. But it cannot match the experience of shopping in a brick & mortar store and getting personal attention & guidance from experienced sales staff!
