Cell phones are known to be recycled after ending its life tenure. Mobile phones are known as the ‘hazardous waste’ in many parts of the world. Actually many chemicals inside the cell phone can reach into the groundwater level, which may end up being hazardous for the mankind. China and India have emerged as the places, where electronic waste recycling has been carried out at the most. It is true that the maximum of the citizens in the world are not aware of the technique called cell phone recycling to create a less polluted world. But the awareness is increasing gradually and it is expected that the whole world will understand the necessity of waste management. According to the data presented by EPA or US Environmental Protection Agency, about 12 million cell phones were recycled among a heap of 141 million discarded in 2009. In fact, computer recycling in Cleveland is going on in a huge pace.

On an average, a cell phone runs about 24 months in terms of the shelf life. In other words, a newer model of cell phone needs to come into the market to replace the older one. This is actually happening because of the rapid progression in mobile industry. According to the experts, this exponential growth is happening at the pace of Moore’s law or faster. Hence the outdated models will end up in the waste field.

Requirement of Recycling

Most of the cell phones contain plastics the valuable metals, which can be recycled easily to save the resource and energy, which will be required to manufacture further products. On other hand, these products have the potential to contaminate the drinking water, soil and air if placed in the landfills. For example lead is used to manufacture the cell phone coating, and the material can cause adverse health issue. Apart from these, the cell phones contain the materials like copper, gold, zinc, beryllium, coltan, and tantalum etc. All of these are available in the nature in limited resources. So by recycling these, resource management are done efficiently too.

In these days, E-waste has become a huge problem in the whole world. Actually, some of the developed countries are shipping their e-waste to some developing countries, which is actually harmful for the people of the later. The concept of cell phone recycling and e-waste recycling can actually help the mankind to get rid of those problems.
