Though they come in many shapes and sizes, the main function of chillers is to absorb heat from equipment or other source and make it cool and dehumidify the air in the surroundings. They are classified into two major categories namely, air-cooled systems and water-cooled systems. The choice of chillers mainly depends upon the location of the industry and the type of its operation. This article discusses the functioning and features of water-cooled chillers.

Water chillers are mainly used in mid to large scale industrial and commercial set-ups. These chillers use a lot of equipment like cooling towers and condensation pumps. The cooling towers are heat rejection devices, which let out the rejected heat into the atmosphere. These towers retain the cool temperatures in buildings or industrial set-ups and are effective when they are installed indoors. The chillers are very energy efficient, though they cost more. They operate very quietly due to the absence of rotating fans present in the air-cooled chillers.

Functioning of a Water-cooled Chiller

The functioning of water based chiller involves pumping of water from the tank to the chiller and pumping it again to the tank from the chiller. An adjustable thermostat helps in maintaining the constant temperature of water in the chiller.

Water chillers are classified into two categories- a closed loop system and an open circuit system.

Open circuit system uses water from an open source to carry on the process of refrigeration, evaporation and condensation. These systems draw water from a tank to the chiller and send it back to the tank. This type of system requires regular water treatments and maintenance to ensure proper quality of water in the chiller.

Closed loop system uses a sealed cooling system. The water is contamination free and the chiller functions effectively while using a closed loop system for industrial chillers. These chillers use a liquid refrigerant to keep the water at a constant temperature.

The water-cooled chillers from Scientifique are energy efficient and can use the free resources of the neighbouring water bodies. This means free cooling for your building or factory throughout the year. The water-chillers operate by letting out the ambient heat into the outside atmosphere thereby reducing the temperature at the source.

Though most of the water-cooled chillers do not need any additional equipment other than those provided with the chiller, here is a list of other supplementary equipment, that help in maintenance and effective functioning of the chillers. These equipments are to be bought separately from the suppliers:

  • Pressure controller
  • Rubber isolation pads to reduce the noise further
  • Visual display station
  • Series converters that aid in centralized control
  • Collectors for hydraulic junction
  • Pumping station with accumulator PBHI
  • Serial interface for connection with BMS

The decision on the type of chiller to be used for an organization should be based on the location, availability of resources and the type of cooling required. Research all the available products and their features thoroughly before making a decision.
