The importance of health and safety at work cannot be overstated. As an employer, you are both morally and legally obligated to make sure that your employees work in both a safe and healthy environment.

You would, under no circumstances, want your employees to work in an environment where their wellbeing is at risk. It also makes good business sense to ensure that your employees are safe during working hours as sick or injured employees can lead to a decline in productivity and a subsequent loss of revenues. Not to mention, there are strict laws and regulations in place that govern health and safety at work. Any failure to keep up with these regulations could result in prosecution and hefty fines in damages.

On the other hand, instituting good health and safety practices will pay for itself as your business productivity remains free from disturbance, insurance costs are reduced, your employees stay satisfied and customers are delighted with a continual and prompt supply of fulfilled orders.

In the U.K., the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is in charge of health and safety regulations in the workplace. This governing body not only puts these regulations in effect but also institute legal proceedings against employers when they are infringed. This is very necessary but to be fair, an employer’s first concern, of course, is to manage their business as efficiently as possible. As such, these regulations impose a lot of strain on employers.

While the HSE admittedly exhibits plenty of information on the regulations, which are regularly updated, the average busy employer often has very little time to glance through them, let alone completely understand them. It is because of this that agencies have surfaced that advise employers and key employees just what the law demands and how to comply by keeping your work premises and practices as safe as possible. These agencies also offer courses on various aspects of health and safety, many of which are certificated.

One of these courses is the IOSH Working Safely training course. This course complies with the HSE's requirements as a safety certificate. It defines and labels workplace hazards and looks at approaches to improving safety performance. The course also looks at reliable systems of work and considers individual responsibility for safety in the workplace, as well as the protection of staff in the working environment.

For the added convenience of the employers and employees, there are also online IOSH courses. The fact that such courses exist underlines the importance of health and safety at work in the modern world.
