Transformers are basically used in applications that require the conversion of one AC voltage level into the other. More broadly, there are two types of transformers: electric transformers and power transformers. Electric transformers operate at very low power levels while on the other hand, Power Transformers work at high voltage power. Electric transformers are used in different consumer equipment such as television, refrigerators, VCR, computers and other gadgets and devices to reduce the actual voltage level to the level at which it operates. While the power transformers are used in power distribution, power generation and transmission systems to either raise or level down the voltage at required levels.

Features Of Power transformers

  • Core – Most of the power conductors utilize the core form design where all the cores are stacked using a high quality grain oriented silicon lamination. The joints are mitered or step lap mitered in order to reduce losses, minimum noise and magnetizing current. The exposed edges of the cores are bonded with the help of low viscosity and high epoxy resin that help to lower down the noise level.
  • Windings – Having a concentrated coil placement, they have a circular design. This type of designing provides them with high short circuit strength and good cooling of the surface of the conductor. The materials used for the conductors can be either aluminum or copper. The types of conductor used can be strip, foil or continually transposed cables. Large cross sections between the conductors allow for minimum short circuit stress. The type of the winding can differ according to the requirements of application. The most common designs depending upon the voltage and current requirements are Strip, layer, barrel, helical, interleaved and shielded disc.
  • Insulation – Insulation materials provide the transformers with high mechanical and short-circuit strength. They are filled with silicon oil and other kinds of fuel that work as insulation. They are also used to provide high level reliability, reduce the risk of power outrage and environmental impact.
  • Tank – It is made up of steel plates that are rounded together to further reduce the size of the transformers. Made from high quality steel plates, they are designed to withstand full vacuum. However, the reduced tank size and weight allow for easier transportation, assembly, handling and installation.
