August born people are lively, friendly and ones who emit positivity around them, similar to their birthstone Peridot. Peridot gems are the only gems that occur in a single color, i.e. green, ranging from light lime green to dark olive green.

One of the rare gems that have a summery hue to it that depicts that end of summer and onset of spring, Peridot was unknown for many until the mid-1990.

Importance of the Gemstone

Peridot is known to be used for good luck, health, peace and prosperity. They are also a symbol of faithfulness, strength and truth. Most often, Peridots are worn to ward off the evil and get rid of nightmares.

History

Derived from the Arabic word ‘Faridat’ meaning ‘gems’, Peridot has been considered a symbol of prosperity and good fortune for ages.

Peridot was quite popular among the Egyptian priests who used the gem to protect themselves from the evil thoughts and negative feelings like jealousy and envy that arose due to the Pharaoh’s powers. It was called the Sun’s Gem and was considered sacred. They were used to ward off the evil and get rid of nightmares.

Early history also reveals the usage of Peridots by the pirates who considered the gem as a powerful defence against evil and when set in gold, it was considered to ward of the evils of the nights.

They Occur Around the World

Peridot was considered to be first found in Egyptian civilization of Zabargad but at present, the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona is the biggest source of the lustrous and summery hue gemstone. They are also found in other regions of the world like Nevada, and Hawaii, Australia, Kenya, China, Brazil, Myanmar, Pakistan, South Africa, Tanzania and Sri Lanka among others. Peridots have been found in pallasite meteorites making it among the few gems that are available in the outer space.

Identical to Emeralds

Often mistaken for emeralds, Peridots glimmer and shine in the light and are worn for good health and prosperity. It is also believed that Queen Cleopatra’s jewellery has Peridots adorned in them instead of emeralds as is the popular belief.

Although Peridots occur in a single color, there are various shades of gems available ranging from yellowish green to dark green with brownish tints in them. You might even mistake them for emeralds but they are a better and cheaper option when you want to gift your loved one born in August something unique and uncommon.

So, try gifting your loved one a Peridot set ring instead of the usual emerald cut diamond ring for his or her birthday that falls in August and surprise them with the stone’s uniqueness.
