With its luxurious and premium quality, Supima cotton is the highest quality fabric grown in America. It refers to the extra-long staple or ELS Pima cotton extensively grown in many countries including America. Supima is a brand that is trademarked and controlled by a non-profit organisation. All Supima is an American grown Pima cotton, but all Pima cotton cannot be Supima. In fact, this fabric is superior to Egyptian cotton as well. Here are five interesting facts about this fabric.

1. Supima Gives Longer, Finer, And Stronger Fibres:

To be called as an extra-long staple fibre, a cotton fibre should have a minimum length of 1 3/8 inches. Supima cotton has an average length of 1 7/16 inches which makes it one of the longest types of ELS cotton fibres ever. Due to its long fibres, it results in a stronger yarn that can be made into lightweight and soft fabrics. This defines superior Supima cotton clothing. Additionally, these fibres are much finer than their counterparts. As a result, they have a lustrous silky feel with lesser pilling and deeper colour shades.

2. Supima is a Rare Variety of Cotton:

It is quite interesting to note that Pima cotton constitutes only 3% of the total cotton cultivated in America. A smaller percentage of this cotton is used by Supima brand. Therefore, it is an extremely rare variety that makes it valued and expensive. Apart from Pima, a majority of American cotton is harvested in the Delta region and it is called the Upland variety.

  1. American Pima Was Traditionally Called As American Egyptian Cotton:It is a historical fact related to American Pima cotton. Way back in the 19th century, the extra-long staple cotton grown in America was referred to as American Egyptian to convey that cotton grown in Egypt was superior to any other variety. Later, it became Pima in honour of American natives Pima community that grew this cotton traditionally. It became popular over years when the federal government launched several programs for cultivation of high-quality ELS cotton branded as Supima cotton clothing.
  2. Supima Can Be Grown In Hot and Arid Desert Climate:

There are only some selected desert regions in the country where high-quality Supima cotton fibre can be grown. Typically, the far west and southwest regions have the best climatic conditions to nurture this plant. It needs a long growing season with arid and hot summers. This variety of cotton needs to be irrigated instead of being rain-fed. So, it also makes Supima a highly rare and extraordinary fabric for designing premium clothes including men’s formal shirts.

5. Supima Is Historically Used As The Strongest And Most Reliable Fabric:

Going back to the history, it has been found in some investigation that denim jeans used for the Goldrush during the 19th century were actually Supima cotton. It was an ELS variety shift from southern parts to Massachusetts for making garments to be used by miners.

These are some interesting facts about the luxurious and the most desired variety of cotton called Supima.
