An improperly sized, overloaded or poorly fitting backpack can affect children's neuro-vertebral health and cause chronic pain such as vertebral deviations and scoliosis: "A backpack worn on an only one shoulder can cause a deviation of the posture. If the bag is too heavy, the body will tend to lean forward to compensate, causing tension on the shoulders and neck, "said Dr. Marie-Hélène Boivin, chiropractor and president of the Association des chiropraticiens du Quebec.

Here are some criteria on which to base to choose a backpack

-The bag is made of a durable but lightweight material

-The straps are ideally 2 inches wide, they are padded and adjustable

Belts are provided at the height of the waist and torso

-The back of the bag is padded for comfort

-Several pouches and compartments facilitate the distribution of the weight of the bag

-The top of the bag must not exceed the top of the child's shoulders

-The bottom of the bag should not be lower than the hips (not supported on the buttocks)

On the contrary, here are the signs of a bad backpack:

-The child leans forward to swing the weight of the backpack

-The child raises one shoulder to prevent the sling from slipping

-The backpack beats him on the backside when he walks

-The child must place a hand under his backpack to relieve the pressure on his shoulders

-The skin of the child wears the straps when he removes them

-The child complains of pain in the back, neck or shoulders.
