Taylor Swift released her latest single, "Delicate," on March 12 as a music video on YouTube. The video became an instant hit, being well-received on YouTube with more than 95 million views in less than a month. The song is the fourth single from her sixth album, "Reputation," which was released on November 10, 2017.

Now I myself personally prefer rock music, specifically alternative rock. I do enjoy other genres as well but have never found myself to be a fan of Taylor Swift. That said, I did enjoy "Delicate" over previous songs.

TWO MESSAGES, ONE LYRICAL AND THE OTHER VISUAL

Taylor Swift’s music is a little too mainstream for my taste. The production is ordinarily too polished, and the lyrics too cliched. Therefore, I have never taken her music, or the respective music videos, too seriously.

THE DELICATE MAGIC

The music video starts off with a close-up of Swift's face, showcasing her stunning blue eyes, complemented by an equally blue sleeveless dress. The camera slowly pans out to reveal her during a red carpet interview, surrounded by security, onlookers, and fans. In the foreground, we photographers snapping pictures. We are seeing what Swift experiences on a daily basis as a celebrity - her life itself isn’t very private.

The video then cuts to images of reports expressing their excitement over her. Swift is then handed a glowing, folded piece of paper by an unknown man dressed in black walking by. She looks around in wonder as to what just happened. One important thing to notice about the opening scene is that the video takes place during the evening.

ANALYZING AND INTERPRETING THE MUSIC VIDEO

The next segment of the music video shows her walking through the lobby with onlookers gasping in awe as they drink champagne. She is then shown surrounded by bodyguards from all corners as she makes her way through the grand hall. She takes a selfie with three other women, only to have a bellhop appear out of nowhere, who is quickly carried off by her bodyguards. I believe that at this moment, Swift may be outlining how her male fans are crazy and unreasonable when compared to her female fans.

She walks past a display case with flowers, but suddenly stops walking, forcing the bodyguards to stop as well. She then proceeds to randomly walk backward and forwards, with her bodyguards behaving as though they are robots. Here, she might be referencing how everyone who surrounds and works with her behaves robotically, without any individuality.

LET THE MAGIC BEGIN

Swift is then shown sitting in an upscale bathroom, where she opens the mysterious note from before. She is looking in the mirror, changing facial expressions from smiles to mime-like expressions. She pulls at her face without actually touching her face, resulting in the movement of her lips according to the actions of her hands. She continues to make fake smiles but synchronized to her hand movements. This is Swift showing us how people control her actions to accommodate the public.

THE FREEDOM TO DO WHAT YOU WANT

She is then interrupted by a group of laughing girls who stumble into the room, again hinting at the fact that she is unable to enjoy her privacy. Swift waves at them, but there’s no response. Looking into the mirror, she is unable to see her own reflection, as though she was a vampire. She touches herself to confirm that she is real, then looks back at the glowing note. Once again, she attempts to get the attention of the girls, but she can’t. This confirms her suspicions that she is becoming invisible.

She makes her way back to the lobby, where her bodyguards are waiting for her. Her attempt to get their attention fails. At this moment, she removes the lower portion of her dress, similar to how basketball players remove their snap-on windbreakers. She is now truly free to be herself. As such, she starts dancing.

AT&T & TAYLOR SWIFT

I could go on and further analyze the video. However, I believe that you should watch it for yourself. I also recently discovered that Taylor Swift has an exclusive agreement with AT&T. As part of this agreement, you can access her music videos and exclusive content whenever you want, as long as you are an AT&T customer.

The service extends to DirecTV as well. If you happen to use Uverse online to connect to the internet, then you actually don’t need DirecTV or even Uverse cable services to access the content, since you are able to access the content through the U-verse app. To make thing even more awesome, AT&T wireless postpaid customers can stream data free TV with the U-verse app, making AT&T the one and only choice for your mobile and home data connectivity.
