Nuvaring is a contraceptive device for women- it is a hormonal birth control. Transparent and flexible enough, the plastic ring is to be inserted into the vagina, deep enough, for its effectiveness. Ordinarily, the ring should be worn for at most 3 weeks.

How it works

Like other birth control methods, Nuvaring prevents pregnancy in women through release of certain hormones that work by suppressing ovulation. This inhibits the ovaries from releasing an egg for fertilization. Additionally, this contraceptive thickens the mucus at the cervix thus making it harder for the sperms to swim across for fertilization.

Warning: this contraception could be unsuited for you in certain conditions:

  • First, ladies who find it uneasy of uncomfortable inserting fingers into themselves, this could be a tricky method form birth control
  • For smokers, aged above 35 years, the use of this contraceptive could come with other serious unwanted effects. Smoking is known to increase the risk of other blood vessels or hear related problems due to the CHCs (combination hormonal contraceptives). One could easily develop heart attack, stroke, or blood clots- these are fatal cases. This risk increases with age and cigarette use.

Women with the following conditions should avoid the ring:

  • Hypertension
  • Liver tumor
  • Diabetes
  • Eye or nerve damage
  • Breast cancer
  • Unexplained bleeding from the vagina
  • Pregnant or mothers trying for a baby

Using the ring

The birth control ring is easy to insert and remove into and from the vagina. The ring does not have to be in any precise position within the vagina. Once placed, you hardly feel it- discomfort could be felt if not well inserted though.

To insert:

  • Choose any position you are comfortable in, so long as the canal is accessible
  • Wash and dry your hands
  • From the re-sealable foil pouch, open near the top to get the ring
  • Between the index finger and your thumb, hold the ring pressing it into a slim shape
  • Gently push the ring into your vagina with a finger
  • The etonogestrel/ethinyl estradiol vaginal ring can work from any position within the vagina- push it far enough if discomfort is felt

To remove:

Once inserted, leave it for 3 weeks. On the fourth week, take it out to allow menstruation- then insert a new one for fresh cycle again. To get the ring out:

  • Wash and dry your hands
  • Select the right position for easy access to the canal
  • Using your index finger, hook the ring and pull it out gently
  • Put it in the re-sealable foil and safely dispose it

For correct use, a new Nuvaring should be inserted after 7 days (1 week). Consider regular insertion- same day and time that the previous ring was removed, even when the period has not stopped.

This contraception does not require daily dosing. It is offered at lower hormonal doses as compared to other methods thus less negative effects.
