It can come off surprising when you find out that the invention of chocolate chip cookies was an accident. Cookies did already exist in America from a long time but the amazing chocolate chip cookies came into existence in the 1930s.

Here are some fun-filled facts about chocolate chip cookies:

  • As said before, the discovery of chocolate chip cookies was a pure accident. Ruth Wakefield, the owner of the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, added broken chocolate chips in her cookie dough expecting the chocolate chips to melt but invented the infamous chocolate chip cookies.
  • Chocolate chip cookies were originally called "Butte-drop chocolate chip cookies". It was in the Boston newspaper where Ruth Wakefield first introduced her chocolate chip cookie recipe in. It was in the 1936 when Wakefield published her first cookbook called Toll House Tried and True Recipes in which the name was renamed to chocolate crunch cookies.
  • The first ever chocolate chip cookie baked was small, about the size of a quarter. It was small enough to completely eat the cookie in a single bite.
  • Nestle loved the cookies so much that they even struck a deal with Ruth Wakefield. Nestle took Ruth’s permission to publish her chocolate chip cookie recipe in Nestle’s recipe book in exchange for lifetime supply of chocolate. After acquiring Wakefield’s recipe, Nestle invented the teardrop shaped chocolate chip cookie in 1939.
  • The Immaculate Baking Company in Flat Rock, North Carolina baked the world’s largest cookie in 2003 weighing about 40,000 pounds and extending up to 101 feet in diameter.
  • Chocolate chip cookie is considered to be America’s favorite cookie. It is estimated that about 53% Americans prefer chocolate chip cookies over peanut butter cookies, oatmeal cookies and other varieties of cookies.
