Selecting the right type of family vehicle requires comparing and contrasting the long list of features found in today's best crossover and SUV vehicles. Style, performance, efficiency and interior are some of the features that matter the most for families on today's roads.

The 2014 Toyota Highlander matches up well with the 2014 Nissan Rogue. Before comparing these two vehicles, it's important to realize that the Highlander is a mid-size Sport Utility Vehicle while the Rogue is a crossover SUV. A comparison between these two models naturally starts under the hood.

This vehicle comes with two different gasoline engine options. A 4 cylinder 2.7 liter engine gets 185 horsepower while a V6 3.5 Liter engine generates up to 270 horsepower. The Nissan Rogue is equipped with 2.5 Liter engine that can get 170 hp. Available as a hybrid model with a 3.5 Liter V6 engine; the Toyota Highlander has an advantage over the Nissan Rogue when it comes to the hybrid department.

Available with the hybrid engine, the best fuel economy that the Highlander can get is 28 miles per gallon on the highway. The Rogue can get up to 33 mpg on the highway because of it is a much lighter vehicle. All of the engines in the Nissan Rogue and Toyota Highlander share the same Double Overhead Camshaft technology.

All-Wheel Drive is available in both the Highlander and Rogue. The Toyota has dynamic torque control AWD that is comparable to the Intuitive AWD in the Nissan. Front Wheel Drive is also available in these SUV models. The Toyota Highlander also boasts a unique Electronic On-Demand All Wheel Drive that offers superior traction and other automatic controls.

Ventilated front disc brakes are featured in both the 2014 Toyota Highlander and 2014 Nissan Rogue. However, the Rogue also boasts vented disc brakes in the rear while the Highlander has solid disc brakes on the back wheels. Standard technology, such as Anti-Lock brakes are also featured in both of these SUV models. The Highlander's Electronic Controlled Braking (ECB) system is matched by the Brake Assist (BA) feature in the Rogue's brakes.

The steering systems in the Toyota Highlander and Nissan Rogue both use electric powered technology for smooth control. The Nissan crossover SUV also offers a speed sensitive option in the advanced steering system. The suspension systems in these two vehicles are also very similar as they have independent front struts. However, the Toyota Highlander has a double wishbone component in the rear suspension in contrast to the multi-link rear suspension in the Nissan Rogue.

The standard transmission system in the 2014 Toyota Highlander is a six speed automatic system with Electronically Controlled ECT-i technology. By contrast, the 2014 Nissan Rogue uses a standard signature Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission system. A CVT transmission system in the Toyota Highlander is available only in the Limited hybrid model.

When it comes to seating capacity, the 2014 Toyota Highlander simply wins over the 2014 Nissan Rogue. Up to eight people can fit into the spacious interior of the Toyota mid-size SUV while the Nissan Rogue can only accommodate up to five people. However, the Hybrid Highlander can fit up to seven people. Additionally, the Toyota Highlander boasts more than 83 cubic feet of cargo space compared to the Rogue's 70 cubic feet considering that the rear seats are completely folded down.

GPS navigation is available in the 2014 Toyota Highlander and the comparable Nissan Rogue. Touch screen technology is incorporated into the modern navigation systems that are also linked to multimedia capabilities for playing back MP3 players and other devices. Both of these models are great vehicles to consider if you are in the market for a new SUV.
