There are no fixed guidelines or specific rules to turn you into an author overnight. Being an author is subjective, and depends on various factors. There are various factors that are involved in the making of a literary artist and, hence, it would be misleading to say that "these are the steps to become an author."

What can be done, instead, is provide a base to develop or hone one’s writing skills and capabilities. This is the first and, perhaps, the most vital and critical step. With a healthy script in hand, it is not a difficult or tedious process to get published. Hence, having writing abilities is the foremost necessity. Taking steps towards this is a way in itself.

If you want to become an author, irrespective of your age, start writing regularly even if it is just for 10 minutes a day. Equally important is to read a lot. Pick up a book and promise yourself that you won't put it down until you reach page 50. Be selective while choosing what you read, because it plays a major role in shaping your thoughts and opinions.

When you have a rough draft of your work ready, share it with people who have slightly more expertise that you in this field. Get their comments and feedbacks and try to fix the errors. Don't get disheartened with criticisms and disapprovals, take their words to heart and try to work upon it. Get in touch with writers and people from the publishing area, for a better view into this field.

In the meanwhile, you can refer to works of various authors, based on the kind of literary work that you wish to produce. This shall particularly help you towards writing in the direction you intend to. Likewise, find out about the various ways to get published, and try to locate book printing and self publishing services which publish the kind of work that you are creating. This will aid in having a clear view into the post-production aspects of the book. Finding a leading book distribution company is also as vital as finding a publisher.

Start asking yourself questions about the title. This will give you a better idea on what the book will be about. Prepare a rough outline, or a synopsis of the book- this can be one paragraph summary of the topic or the core message of the book. Determine your target audience. Try to tell something new with your book, and not something that has already been told several times. Then decide on the arguments, evidence, ideas, information, that you need to prove your point.

Once you are ready with the outline, just start writing. It might be possible that the first draft is a crap, but don't get disappointed and keep on writing until you have a perfect draft. Revise, rewrite, add new chapters and shed the unnecessary ones. Share your work with different people and get their expert comments and feedback. You might have to prepare ten drafts before you end up on that perfect one, but keep on writing, only then you can have something worth keeping.
