As an authorised Skoda dealership, we only ever use genuine Skoda parts in for servicing and selling to our customers. Here in Australia, many car owners and manufacturers have been affected by sales of counterfeit parts. These components look identical to the real thing right down to the packaging. However, once they are installed, their shortcomings become immediately apparent with early failure and damage to other connected parts. These fake parts can even be dangerous, and they can certainly cause damage that’s expensive to fix. Let’s take a closer look at a recent counterfeit parts seizure to see what parts buyers are up against.

Counterfeit Oil Filters

Recently a consignment of counterfeit oil filters was seized that has placed thousands of Australian engines at serious risk of expensive damage. Authorities carried out bench testing on counterfeit oil filters that were marked as manufactured by Toyota, Kia, and Hyundai. It was found that these fake components had several flaws including a major issue that could expose some crucial engine parts to early failure and catastrophic damage.

This testing was carried out in laboratories in Japan and Korea, and it revealed that important bypass filters inside these fake parts were prone to being blocked and clogged. Any bypass valves that remain open cannot filter the oil passing through, and impurities can enter the engine to cause damage to vital parts. Over 500 counterfeit oil filters were seized in total, and they represent a very small part of this lucrative criminal enterprise. The affected car manufacturers had to track down their affected customers and issue a warning.

The touring car legend Mark Skaife is an ambassador for the Genuine is Best campaign. Recently, he stated "If you have bought one of these filters online thinking it is legitimate, then think again", he added "those few dollars that you think you saved could end up costing you thousands," and he went on to say "Unfortunately we don’t know exactly how many of these fake filters with their dodgy materials have reached our streets". Of course, Mr. Skaife is correct and the old adage "let the buyer beware" should be applied here, if a part deal seems too good to be true, it could well be a counterfeit part. It’s a good idea to play it safe and order your parts from an official Skoda dealer. These genuine parts may cost more initially, but they will last longer, and they won’t cause extensive damage to your car.
