1. Put the plastic away. A World Economic Forum study has indicated that by the year 2050, all our global oceans will contain more amounts of plastic in comparison to actual fish! The menace of plastic pollution has assumed much larger proportions than being just an alarming issue. Do you know that it requires around 1, 000 years for a plastic bottle to be decomposed? Poisonous greenhouse gases are released whenever we dump any plastic in landfills. It is high time to ditch plastic and look for eco-friendly alternatives. For example, plastic cups and plastic pens can be replaced by paper cups and vintage ink pens respectively. Again, plastic straws and plastic bags should also be discontinued for good.

2. Segregate waste: a good idea is to get colour coated garbage bin in Dubai. You can have yellow and green bins for glass and organic waste respectively while red and grey bins can cover hazardous waste and metal respectively. Blue bins can be used for plastic waste. There should be segregation into non-biodegradable and bio-degradable categories. The installation of pedal bin in Dubai is expected to yield commendable results in terms of waste reduction.

  1. Composting works: Overall generation of waste by urban households can be reduced to the tune of 30% with composting. This also helps in sparking growth of plants by offering vital nutrients. This also doubles up as a fertilizer of sorts. With composing and segregation methods, a family of around four members can lower overall waste generation to 100 kg or even less from a whopping 1, 000 kg and upwards previously.
  2. Ditch paper: You should know that paper accounts for a whopping 30% of the waste that goes into landfills. One can cut down on paper by making use of old garments and cloth for cleaning and other purposes. It is also a wise idea to replace paper napkins in your kitchen with hand towels. Also, paper plates in house parties should be avoided.
  3. The 3R philosophy: Your mantra should be reuse, reduce and recycle or the philosophy of 3Rs. You can reuse plastic bottles for decorative purposes at home and you can also make the transition to using items such as glue/printer cartridges/plastic folders which can be reused/refilled. Reuse old shampoo and other plastic bottles as charging stations for mobile phones if you can and use your old and worn-out toothbrushes for varied home cleaning requirements.
