White kitchen cabinets are a great way to store your kitchen essentials and have a clean look. They are easy to clean, but over time if they are not looked after they can begin to yellow and look dirty. Another problem is alkyd based paints that can impart a yellow hue as they cure over time and cigarette smoke. When your kitchen cabinets are yellow, they can look dirty, even if your kitchen is immaculately clean. Let’s take a closer look at how you can clean those cabinets effectively and restore them to their former glory.

Before You Get Started:

Cleaning kitchen cabinets effectively will require a few useful cleaning tools and products, such as an all purpose cleaner, white vinegar, wood cleaner, a new sponge, a spray bottle, an old clean towel, baking soda, ammonia and a soft scrubbing brush. When you’re rinsing the cabinets down, a second sponge and a bucket filled with clean water will also be helpful. It may be tempting to use an abrasive cleaning product or scourer on a painted cabinet, but this will damage the paint. Always open the kitchen windows before starting to provide adequate ventilation. Finally, don’t ever mix the ammonia with other cleaners or bleach products.

For Simple Cleaning:

Make a cleaning solution; mix half a cup of either all purpose cleaner, white vinegar or wood cleaner with half a cup of water and put the mixture in the spray bottle. Spray the mix on the cabinets. Only work on one cabinet at a time and gently scrub the surface with the sponge in circles. Rinse out the sponge, wipe down the cabinets with clean water and then dry the cabinet off with the clean towel.

Clean Yellow Grease Stains:

First, wet your sponge and wring it till it’s just dry, ventilate the kitchen and put on a pair of rubber gloves. Put a little undiluted ammonia on your damp sponge and clean the cabinets from bottom to top. Starting at the bottom will limit the exposure to ammonia dropping on your arms and hands as you clean. Scrub gently to remove the built up grease deposits, rinse out the sponge and then wipe off the excess ammonia. Once the cabinets are rinsed thoroughly, dry them off with the clean, soft towel.

Cleaning Tougher Stains:

This will require a mix of a half cup of water and a half cup of baking soda to make a cleaning paste. Take a damp sponge or the soft scrubbing brush and dip it into the cleaning mixture. Then gently scrub at the stubborn yellow stains and leave the mixture to soak into for at least five minutes. Once the time is up, wipe off the mix with a clean damp sponge and dry the cabinet with a soft dry towel.
