Things to Consider When Choosing RV Furnaces

An RV furnace acts as the main interior heating source for your vehicle. It is essential for maintaining the correct temperature and comfort level inside your RV during the colder months. This is why it is extremely important to pick the right furnace to match your particular vehicle and usage requirements.

Check out your RV's existing ductwork or accessory slot for the furnace so you can select the correct size to fit your vehicle. This is very important for recreational vehicles with ducted furnace systems. Note that there are 2 types of furnaces available. ‘Ducted’ furnaces are built into your RV and have preconfigured ductwork to distribute heat throughout your vehicle’s interior. Using this type of furnace is more involved. To make it work properly requires careful planning and installation.

Meanwhile, ‘direct discharge’ furnaces offer a more direct and simpler heating solution as they require no special installation and can be situated virtually anywhere in the RV's interior. They can also be very compact and come in smaller packages while providing the same heating effect as ducted systems. They are ideal for simple retrofits or for simple replacement of old heater systems.

Another thing to look out for when buying an RV furnace is its rated heating capacity. This is measured in British Thermal Units or BTU's, which is a measurement of thermal energy needed to raise the temperature of a pound of water by 1-degree Fahrenheit. Check your vehicle specifications for the heater rating required and get a replacement heater closest to the recommended figure. Try not to go over as this will result in the heater "over cycling" which makes it turn on and off more frequently than necessary—ultimately making it inefficient and ineffective in maintaining the proper temperature. Keep in mind that too much heating will result in poor performance from your heater unit, which will waste a lot of energy and result in poor control and reduced comfort levels in your RV's interior. For ducted systems, it is better to refer the installation to a professional in order to ensure correct ducting, clearances, air return, and venting, and prevent electrical shorts and fire hazards due to faulty wiring and incorrect clearances and installations.
