It is rightly said that picture speaks more than a thousand words. Illustrations exemplify or highlight a particular point for viewers, so they can interpret the text in a certain way.

Picture book illustrator Comenius's Orbis Pictus was among the first book with illustration and primer text written on it. Walter Crane, Kate Greenaway, and Randolph Caldecott gave a new concept to the world of illustration, they produced a picture book in which more stress was equally given to text and images. In 1960 there was an extreme change in the field of illustration, there were variety, creativity, and abundance, new techniques were established, color printing was improvised and images were combined with graphic and art. A leading picture illustrated book of 1960 was Maurice Sendak's ' Where the Wild Things Are'. 1980-1990 was the era in which illustrators have done massive changes and improvement, which were accepted by the society wholeheartedly.

The main motive of an illustrative book is to simplify and clarify the text to readers, even people are more persuaded to read books loaded with illustrations as they are more comprehensible. Illustrations are key elements of children's book, they help them when they start reading and learning. Through pictures and images they understand the concept, idea of the story and text, they do not need to draw any picture in their mind as they are right in front of them in the books and they relate to it very well. Stories are the best medium to educate and develop morality among kids and now we find books stacked with lots of pictures which attract kids and influence them to read. At times there are complexities with words and languages so illustrated books penetrates in the minds of kids making their level of grasping power high.

Illustrations are not only restricted to the area of kids but also serve its larger purpose in today's world of readers. There are large number of illustrations that are used in print and visual media which help the audience and readers to understand the circumstances easily, even if they have language problem they can understand the gist easily. Illustrations engage the readers and develop concentration among them avoiding a dull and monotonous reading.
