With the increase in population and new technologies cropping up, the demand for electricity and power has been at an all-time high. The demand level is so high that in certain cities the demand level exceeds the supply level. While we get agitated by a few hours of power-cut, there are cities and districts in the country where power stays only for the amount of time that we are deprived of. Such is the variation between the supply and demand. Now, understanding the entire process of power transmission from scratch to end can be a tad bit complicated. However, we can aim at understanding a major part of this process - Electric Power Transmission.

We know that electricity generated at power plants cannot be directly transmitted to households and commercial sites. The power in the electricity generated by these power plants is way higher than what our appliances can handle and it needs to be trimmed down to prevent our homes from burning down. Also, it would be too much of a hassle for power to be transmitted from the generating sites to multiple destinations directly. Hence a proper process was designed to transfer power from these power-plants to our homes.Electric Power transmission is a part of this entire process. Electricity, when generated in power plants, is first sent to various strategically located substations. These substations then tone down the voltage and transmit it to different locations on the basis of their requirements. For example, a home requires 220V. However, the amount available at the substations is around few hundred kV. Thus the amount is reduced to the required Volts and sent to our homes. The process of ramping up the voltage in power and transmitting it from generating sites to substations is known as Electric power transmission.

Electric Power transmission is crucial to the entire power transmission process to make electric power transmission effective and efficient, a lot of cutting-edge technologies and turnkey solutions have emerged in the market. With the increase in demand for proper power transmission in India, a lot of companies providing the same services have popped up and due to the immense demand for power within and outside the country, these companies have been successful in setting up bases even abroad in almost every continent.

Now, having understood electric power transmission and how essential it is, it is time to discuss some of the extraordinary technologies being used in the country for Electric power transmission.

  • State-of-the-art Infrastructure-When electricity is being transferred from one place to another, amount of electricity produced is never equal to the amount reaching the substations because of loss of power during transmission. Therefore after electricity is dispatched from the plants, it’s amped up to make up for the loss using a step-up transformer. However, recovering the lost power totally is impossible. Hence setting up numerable transmission lines, inter and intra-state transfer systems are crucial for the transfer of power with minimal loss.
  • LIDAR- To make power reach the valleys of J&K, Light Detection and Ranging was used - an extraordinary feat in the power transmission process
  • Ever-changing technological landscape-Companies not only ensure efficient power transmission but have to try and make the process adhere to sustainable development.

Power Transmission may sound like an easy term but the whole process is most definitely not "easy". A lot of things can go wrong along the way. However, with the combined efforts of the government as well as these power transmission companies, we easily get this basic necessity, without knowing much about its complications at the comfort of our homes.
