Jeeps first came into existence when Willys MB manufactured vehicles for the American military for World War II, which had the capability to travel long distances comfortably and could also pass any land obstacles smoothly and were named as Willys Jeep.

Jeep’s ownership changed many times over past years and presently, Jeep is owned by FCA US LLC. Under the ownership of AMC, Jeep launched its first off-road capability vehicle named Wrangler. Wrangler debuted in the automotive market in the year 1986 as a new model after discontinuation of the famous Jeep CJ (Civilian Jeep) series. Currently, the Wrangler models available are the 4th generation models. It would be not wrong to say that Wrangler won most of the driver's heart with its awesome and powerful off-road capabilities. But Wrangler YJ still remaining the peoples choice for the most popular off-road preferred vehicle during the period 1986-1995.

Various Models Since 1986 are:

  1. YJ (1986-1995)
  2. TJ (1996-2006)
  3. JK (2006-2018)
  4. JL (2018-present)

History of Wrangler YJ:

More comfortable on-road Jeep models were designed by American Motors Corporation (AMC) in an attempt to attract drivers who can drive Wrangler on a daily basis. Nevertheless, just like the Willys MB and the CJ Jeeps before it, all Wrangler models continued to use a separate body and frame, rigid live axles both front and rear, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windshield, and can be driven without doors. It was undoubtedly a new design with improved handling, increased comfort, and wider track. Wrangler YJ still uses leaf spring suspensions similar to that of the CJ but in case of YJ, the springs were wider.

The powertrain options available in the Wrangler YJ are:

2.5 L AMC straight-4 engine (1987-1995)

4.2 L AMC straight-6 engine (1986-1980)

4.0 L AMC straight-6 engine (1990-1995)

Cons:

  1. U-joints were not strong.
  2. Another problem is the weak clutch kit of jeep wrangler 2002
  1. According to YJ owners, the positioning of wiper blades was also odd.
  2. Steering column needed to be replaced.
  3. Customers also had to face consistent problems with the gearbox and the leaks in the transfer case.
  4. Owners also face issues with the mileage of the vehicle.

Pros:

1. Powerful engine.

2. Good handling, smooth and comfortable drive.

3. With some upgrades the car performed as a good offroader as well.

3. Best general purpose car ever, it is safe and reliable.
