Use of Adhesive Technologies in Building and Construction

Adhesives are basically the glue to bind two surfaces and resist their separation. It has been used for centuries and is made up of natural material like tree sap, beeswax, and tar. There are different types of adhesives available based on their composition and properties for different material with a different name but the main purpose of all the adhesives is to bind the items together. Adhesives and sealants used in industrial construction must be durable, heat resistant, and stable. Based on their quality, the types of adhesives used in building construction are:

Resins- Resins can be either remolded at high temperature or cannot be remolded.This category includes thermostatic or thermosetting adhesives.

Hot Melt- This is basically used to harden or soften the adhesive whenever required, by using cold or heat. It can also be easily rectified if something goes wrong at the time of construction.

Contact Spray- Thisis a waterproof and transparent adhesive which is used to bind the products temporarily or permanently.

Acrylic- Acrylic industrial adhesives are of two types, solvent and emulsion. It requires 2 different components to mix and activate to create the bond.

Anaerobic Adhesive- This type of adhesive can be used without oxygen or air. It can bind a variety of materials like paper, masonry, plastic, wood, rubber etc.

Conductive- This is used when the there is a need to avoid electromagnetic or electrostatic interference while bonding.

Epoxy Adhesives- This is used in the automobile and aircraft industries and can also be used for manufacturing plywood.

Pressure Adhesives- This type of adhesive doesn’t require solvent, heat or water to activate the adhesive, it simply needs pressure to form a bond.

What is the use of adhesives in building construction?

Construction work is increasing tremendously. There are numerous buildings being constructed all over the world at any given time. The building industry requires adhesives for multiple purposes like for flooring, wallpaper, furniture, tile, carpet, countertops, etc. The use of adhesive is discussed below.

Flooring Adhesives- This category refers to the type of adhesive which is used to install the floor covering material like carpet, vinyl, etc. There are different types of flooring adhesives like polyurethane, water-based, and carpet adhesives. Each of the adhesives has their own importance and compositions which are used for flooring.

Furniture Adhesive- Furniture adhesives requireadhesives which are strong and provide long-lasting bonds with high loads. The adhesive also needs to offer the desired aesthetic to the furniture. Water solvent or transparent adhesives include polyurethane and polychloroprene chemistry which provides the strong bond to the furniture with aesthetic.

Adhesive technologies has gained importance and is being widely used across the globe. The adhesive not only binds the two items but makes them beautiful and attractive to be used by the people for relaxing or aesthetic purposes.
