What are the Rights of a Caged Bird?
Posted: Oct 06, 2018
Nobody knows when exactly people started to keep birds as pets or displays in aviaries and zoos. The more alarming thing is that many still fail to observe the proper provisions of the most basic needs that the birds need. Birds are known to be intrinsic and this trait is what makes it easy for them to adjust to almost every environment. However, you still have to make sure that they are safe and secure. One way to do that is to buy bird enclosure netting.
Here is a list of the rights that a bird should be provided to. This should serve as a reminder to every zookeeper and owner to ensure that the birds that they keep in captivity are dealt with in the most humane way possible.
Right to Eat Healthy Food
You might not know this but according to research, there is a big difference in feeding a bird with food according to their caloric needs versus feeding them with what is healthy for them. Often, those species that have more sensitive needs in nutrition are kept as pets or in private aviaries.
Many zoos fail to be educated about this.
Traditionally, zoos will just feed a bird with seeds, because after all, they are the most common food items that birds are fed with. Actually, there are studies that prove how birds could get syndromes and malnutrition with the continuous feeding of seeds. So, it is important that zoos do their own research and pattern a bird’s diet according to the needs of a particular species.
Right to Be Provided with Clean Water
Honestly, it is not just birds that need clean water. All animals, especially those that are kept in cages need clean water. Failing in providing clean water for birds at the zoo can result in health issues. This is why it is important that zookeepers do the right maintenance measures to ensure that only clean water is provided to birds.
This is fairly easy to achieve. A zookeeper just needs to make sure that the water dishes of the birds are washed and cleaned on a daily basis. Moreover, when they are worn out, the water dishes need to be replaced immediately. Lastly, they should be made with non-toxic materials.
Aside from that, of course, you will need to pay attention to your source of the water. All these cleaning and maintenance efforts will be for nothing if the water source is the one that is contaminated.
Right to Safe Enclosures
When we talk about a safe enclosure, this normally means a space that will provide a safe housing for birds. Zookeepers need to ensure that the cages and enclosures where a bird will be staying are made with non-hazardous materials. Birds love to chip on any material that they have access to. So, the materials used to construct the cage should not pose any hazard to the bird’s health when eaten.
The next time you buy bird enclosure netting, make sure you research about it well. You should consider a lot of things such as the size, material, and comfort that it will provide to the specific species of birds that you will be keeping in your zoo.
