Advantages Of Sapphire Engagement Rings

When it comes to engagement rings, diamonds are the undisputed, unquestioned standard for topping stones. However, in recent years, a number of alternatives have gained levels of popularity which threaten the long-standing stalwart. And with good reason – most of them have some definite advantages over diamonds which should be considered by the discerning engagement ring shopper.

A good example is sapphire engagement rings. Even before witnessing a resurgence thanks to the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, and to actress Penelope Cruz, this type of stone was already favoured by certain sections of the bridal world for the large number of distinctive positive characteristics it displays.

For instance, when compared to diamonds, sapphires have an advantage with regard to hardness and, therefore, durability. Sturdier than even the hardest diamonds, these stones will withstand a lot of wear and tear, meaning owners of sapphire engagement rings do not have to worry about their stones cracking or suffering damage on a whim. A perfect choice for more active brides and grooms!

Similarly, while traditionally blue, sapphires are available in a number of other hues to suit all tastes. Blue sapphires are very calming and have a soothing visual effect, but pink, white, purple or brown sapphires can add extra fire to sapphire engagement rings, making them more appealing to brides and grooms with strong personalities. The ever-popular, but also quite rare crystalline sapphires represent an even more refined option, sure to satisfy classier or more demanding brides and grooms.

Whatever the chosen colour, shoppers are advised to stick to the middle ground, hue-wise, as the more ‘standard’ the stone’s colouring is, the easier it is to combine with a band. Similarly, the medium hue is said to have a luminescence closer to that of a diamond, which will no doubt please brides still pining for that type of stone.

Another perk of sapphire engagement rings when compared to diamonds has to do with the diversity of meanings and symbolism the stones can acquire depending on what colour they have. A blue sapphire will represent serenity, but a pink sapphire is said to help the wearer overcome natural shyness, and a yellow sapphire is deemed appropriate for the pragmatic individual, as it is meant to bring affluence, wealth and good decision-making power. Transparent crystal sapphires are said to help their wearers solve their problems themselves, and may also be a good choice for the more free-spirited halves of any given couple.

It is, therefore, evident that sapphires do possess a few advantages over diamonds when it comes to serving as engagement ring stones. It is up to the couple to decide if the parameters laid out above are appealing enough to sway their choice away from the traditional and towards something more unique.
