The point where it all started - Reminiscing the good old PSTN
Posted: Oct 08, 2018
You know what VoIP is by now. You are well aware of the implications of an internet-based communication system, like that of a Cisco phone system. But, it wouldn’t do justice to our understanding, if the importance of a traditional telephone system isn’t rightfully acknowledged first. Thus, in view of the above let’s spend some minutes of our precious time to deconstruct the traditional phone systems first. It is also known as the public switched telephone network or PSTN. In principle, the works, the functions and the means to avail a traditional phone service haven’t changed around the world. But pleased o note that the technology that is fundamental to its operation has evolved quite a few times over the last century. These phone systems which may be written off by many business and organizations alike are still in use around the globe.
The best part of an operational traditional telephone system is the assurance that you can always depend on it to allow you to connect you to the intended recipient, whether it rains or it doesn’t rain. For any human conceived system this system made a breakthrough, for it was the only communication system which is available at your disposal. It is even not necessary for you to know the intended recipients’ number. Just like the advent of Cisco phone system in Washington is making ripples in the business communication field and is a compelling business of all sizes to effectuate this change, the incorporation of the traditional phone system in our daily lives has also impacted the way we have conceived the world around us. With the traditional worldwide communication system which is the PSTN, there has been a profound social, political, cultural and economic impact ubiquitously evident.
No high sounding words or jargons; simply with a speaker, a microphone and 2 wires, the traditional phone system epitomized the adage that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, indeed. During the heydays of the PSTN, the telephone calls were being managed by operators at the switchboard located the telephone exchange. When the popularity soared, the numbers of subscribers increased and so did their aspirations of connecting with people further away. This overloaded the telephone operators. Thus the technology to replace the manual operators with an automated technology was deemed necessary. The same way decades later the technology to replace on-premise private branch exchange would be pioneered by Cisco phone system. In 1947, the engineering prowess at AT&T Bell Lab helped in developing a unique numbering system. This numbering system later came to be known as the 3-3-4 systems.
