After deciding that you want to scrap your car to car wreckers. The next step is canceling your car registration and disposing of your number plates.

Cancelling your vehicle registration removes the vehicle from the motor vehicle registry, which means you cannot legally use the vehicle on the road.

If the registrant or insurance company requests it, only the New Zealand Transport Authority can cancel the vehicle registration. In some cases, we can also cancel the registration without a request.

How to cancel your registrationFill out the application form to cancel the registration (MR15) form* and pay the management fee to the registered agent.Gift ID.Provide the dealer with a license plate number (if you do not submit a license, you may not receive a refund for any unused license fees).You may also need to pay an unpaid license fee.* The MR15 form is only available at registered agents.

If you have unpaid license feesIf the vehicle license has expired, you will need to pay the license fee from the date the license expires to the date of cancellation.

You can choose to pay when you apply to cancel your registration, or pay later.

If you choose to pay at the time, you will be charged a license fee and a management fee of $9.10.

If you choose to pay later:

You will also need to pay a management fee of $9.10 at the time of cancellation.We will send you a payment notification by email to get arrears.You will be required to pay a payment notice within 14 days of the date of notification and an additional management fee of $10.20 will be charged when you make the payment.
