From the beginning of jewellery-making time Mother Nature’s influence has been seen in many different shapes and forms. The beauty of the natural world has been a source of inspiration for designers throughout the ages and is currently seen in the gorgeous creations and subtle interpretations from designer Jon Dibben. However, some designers, such as Julie Martick are also creating, in response to a growing demand, pieces that feature literal animal designs such as badgers, otters and foxes.

Growing Appeal

This year’s most notable growing trend, showcased at the Jewellery and Watch Show in Birmingham, was the abundance of jewellery pieces featuring animals. While the world of floral motifs has been an ongoing favourite amongst designers for years, its natural partner, the world of fauna, has been somewhat neglected. However, designers are re-embracing animal themes and creating exquisite pendants and earrings featuring an assortment of wildlife.?Subtle Influence

The more subtle designs of Jon Dibben have enduring appeal with consumers attracted to their exquisite and creative portrayal of the beauty of the natural world. Having spent two years in a hut on a beach on the Greek island of Naxos Jon Dibben cultivated a talent for making simple jewellery from shells and beads. This creativity evolved as he incorporated precious metals and stones and now has a growing collection of fine and bespoke jewellery that encapsulates the true beauty of nature’s influence.

The Quirky Consumer

As people are becoming more experimental with fashion, the demand for quirkier designs has increased. Butterfly motifs are still a favourite, but more unusual animals are also now being offered on the jewellery scene. Everything from domestic animals to farm animals and even exotic zoo animals are appearing on cuff links, necklaces and even engagement rings. Fei Lui’s upcoming "Constellation Collection" features signs of the Zodiac with their animal representation. Lui has said that, "In Chinese tradition, animals have a lot of significance, where we believe that the Chinese Zodiac influences a person’s traits and personality, for example being born in the year of the pig is seen to be very lucky. I believe that we all have animal spirits within us, which is why we cherish animals so much, and I feel that using animalistic symbols is an internal bridge between us and animals".

So whether it is the subtle beauty of nature’s influence found in the designs of Jon Dibben or the literal animal representations of Julie Martick’s creations, there is something for every nature and animal lover. Jewellery trends and designs will no doubt continue to follow the consumer’s demands resulting in even more creative and artistic pieces that push the boundaries of the imagination.
