Should I buy a Class C or Class A motorhome?

Whether you are a first-time buyer or a seasoned travel enthusiast, it’s likely that you’ve considered buying a motorhome. However, when it comes to buying a motorhome, choices can be daunting. With exciting options in both new and used motorhomes, we have just the tips to help you decide.

Class A motorhomes are built on a commercial truck or bus chassis and offer large storage space. On the other hand, Class C motorhomes are built on a van or small truck chassis. They provide sufficient storage space and an additional sleeping area above the driver's cabin, so although they aren’t as large as Class A vans, they can still comfortably fit a family.

Class A - motorhomes are big, ranging from 21 feet to 45 feet in size and can be intimidating for a first-time buyer. Manoeuvring them through roads or finding a comfortable parking spot in the caravan park can be cumbersome.

Class C - motorhomes, on the other hand, are easier to navigate and park in a camping spot. Even if you are a first-time buyer, you’ll need little practice to be able to comfortably manoeuvre it front and back before you take it on long trips. The driveability is a lot easier in Class C as compared to Class A. Especially as you grow older, you may not want the challenge of driving the big Class A.

Unlike a Class A motorhome that has very little distance between the windshield and the driver, Class C has a large hood and engine in front of the driver. This provides the driver with sufficient safety when it comes to front impact accidents. Additionally, Class C motorhomes come with airbags and multiple entrances and exits. On the flip side most Class A motorhomes have a sturdy fibreglass roof and expansive windshield that offers you more visibility.

High initial outlay apart, the running expenses including cost of servicing, maintenance and insurance is higher in the case of a Class A motorhome. Whereas servicing and availability of spare parts or mechanics are easy to find and affordable for a Class C motorhome.

Class A motorhomes are like a house on wheels. It has a queen or king-sized bed, full-sized bathrooms, sofas and dining areas. Its cousin the Class C motorhome, though not as luxurious, does offer family-friendly floor plans with sufficient living space including a complete bathroom, kitchen and living room with slide-outs to increase living areas in some.

Pros of Class A Motorhomes

  • Luxurious and comfortable living space
  • Easy to drive and less fatigue due to excellent suspensions
  • Offer better visibility with their expansive windshield
  • Shorter turning radius
  • Automatic levelling

Pros of Class C Motorhomes

  • Affordable and easier to drive because of its small size.
  • Spacious enough to accommodate guests and family
  • Generous exterior storage with slide-out sections
  • Family-friendly floor plans
  • Comes with airbags for driver safety
  • Easy to manoeuvre and park
  • Excellent choice for families, long journeys and extended stays

While a Class A motorhome scores high in terms of space, Class C motorhomes triumph when it comes to flexibility and drivability. Overall, both these motorhomes are amazing to live in and drive.
