RO Water Purifiers have become an integral part of every home as they are a reliable and a source of safe drinking water. RO is a system that is used to remove chemicals and impurities from the tap water making it safe for various drinking, cooking and agricultural applications. RO Purifiers consist of a semi-permeable membrane which not only eliminates chemicals and microbes from the water, but also improves its quality, taste and odor. Here are some quick facts about the RO system.

Working Of RO Water Purifier

The filtration process of a RO system is quite complex and rigorous. The machinery has two tanks which can store water. The contaminated water passes through the first filter tank on which the machine applies excessive pressure forcing the water to pass through the membrane. The membrane collects and traps all the solid particles and impurities thus, purifying the water. The contaminated water leaves the tank and the treated water flows through a carbon filter in the second tank which removes organic chemicals. The thoroughly purified water then becomes suitable for drinking.

Factors Affecting The Quality Of Water

  • Dissolved Particles: Household RO systems generally operate on low levels of pressure between 25 to 50 units. If the water has higher levels of dissolved particle content, then a booster pump is required to increase the pressure level.
  • Temperature: The ideal temperature of water for effective operation of reverse osmosis membranes is 25 degree Celsius. If the temperature drops to 5-10 degrees, the capacity of water treatment decreases. However, RO units have inbuilt small diameter feed lines which help in warming up the water before reaching the membrane.
  • Membrane Fouling: Sometimes, the membranes of filter system are clogged by bacterial slimes and accumulated chemicals and metal compounds. However, these membranes can be disinfected by using chlorine, iodine or peracetic acid. It is always advisable to keep a check on the disinfection products and procedures of the system to ensure constant supply of clean and healthy water.

An ideal RO Water Purifier is the one which destroys all the pathogens and also filters out the harmful chemicals and impurities from the water to ensure safe drinking water.
