Can Divorce Statistics Predict Your Future

If you’re heading to a top divorce attorney in Perth, you may also start reading divorce statistics. You want to know that you’re not alone – maybe there’s something you overlooked when you got married that caused your divorce. You can find a lot of divorce statistics online. For example, in 2011, about a third of all divorce filings mentioned Facebook. Maybe that makes you feel that you were on social media too much during your marriage. If you gain weight or lose weight during your marriage, some statistics say that you have a higher chance of divorce.

The fact is, though, that divorce statistics are misleading. Every person, and every marriage, is different. All of these stats show correlation, and that can’t be mistaken for cause. Some statistics say that marriages where both spouses have a college degree are more likely to last, but many college-educated couples get divorced, too.

The difference in correlation and cause is that there is nothing that specifically ties these statistics to the reason the couples didn’t make their marriages work. The studies were based on surveys, and there is only a limited amount of information you can get from those. Some of the statistics may be perfectly true, but we don’t know for sure. We can’t say with any confidence that having kids keeps you married. There is a lower divorce rate when kids are involved, but that isn’t necessarily the only factor that applies for those couples.

There are many reasons for divorce. Money…infidelity…couples growing apart. But there is no one person who can tell you whether you will get divorced. If you’re both willing and able to face any problems that arise and work on them together, you’re less likely to look to a family law firm in Perth to work out a divorce settlement. But even if both of you try, sometimes it just doesn’t work.

There is no sure way to predict the outcome of any marriage.

The statistics are out there. You can read and analyse the stats for days and still not know why your marriage didn’t work. The only way you’re going to know is to look at your relationship, identify problems and see if you can make sense of it. What you can depend on, though, is that you’re not alone.

Many people get divorced, and the best thing you can do is get through it and move on. Make your next relationship better. Maybe you’ve learned something from your marriage that you can apply later. Or maybe you don’t even want to get married again – that’s okay, too.

The Bottom Line

The difference in correlation and cause is that there is nothing that specifically ties these statistics to the reason the couples didn’t make their marriages work. The studies were based on surveys, and there is only a limited amount of information you can get from those. Some of the statistics may be perfectly true, but we don’t know for sure.
