Why Should You Get A Case For Your Phone | Statistics for Phone Breaking

A friend of mine has been using her phone for the past three years. And it is not a Nokia, so I was a bit interested in the built quality of the device. As it so happens, I had considered the same device at one point for myself. But at the time, I was looking for a cheaper phone and I decided to let it go. And since it has been three years, I was expecting some issues cropping up with the phone. She was able to keep her phone from physical harm by using a quality cover, but the software usually starts causing trouble after it has been on the device for such a long time.

When technology behaves erratically

And right on cue, her phone starts acting up. One fine day, I was travelling though her city and had to catch a flight late in the evening. I had the option to meet her and decided to try meeting her. To be noted, this is a friend that I made in college and have not seen for more than three years now. We have been keeping in touch via digital means. So, when the opportunity struck to meet her, I decided to give her a call. She picked up the call and in our usual fashion of teasing each other, she started the call with;

She: Hello, who's speaking?

Me: Very good beta, you forgot me. I thought had saved my number after we have been talking at least once a week.

She: (Upon realising that it was me) Oh! arey yar, my phone's been acting up. The display is not working and only I know the trouble I faced while receiving your call.

Meanwhile I am thinking it is very daring of you to pick up a call without not knowing the caller. We have caller ID for a reason. So, anyway, we talked for a while and since we decided to further prolong our separation and meet the next time I was in her town. She also asked me to let her know once my flight landed. Next day I called her and got the news that her phone had switched off in the night and when she powered it on this morning, it worked fine. Ah, great are the wonders of technical advancement. It creates problems and solves them as well.

I decided to investigate the issue with her phone, but that is a story is still in development and is meant for a different time. Here I want to talk about the upkeep involved with our smartphones.

Phones are not built to last anymore

So, when you get a phone, it has become second nature to look for a case to in case of accidents. However, we forgot the era of Nokia, when the phones were capable of stopping bullets. From personal example, I was recently with my parents. Even after trying them to shift to smart phones, they insist on the classical Nokia, which allows them to talk with people and receive messages. Even MMS do not work on that phone. That phone has been around a long time, 12-13 years I believe. In the time they've been carrying this piece, I've changed 3-4 handsets. Which makes me think, either the ones I carried were weak or Nokia built their phones to be usable in the long term, instead of today's phone which don't receive updates after 3 years of usage. And I am not talking about premium phones, which become outdated the moment they land. I mean the phones that reach the top of the bestselling list.

Fragile phones call for strong covers

With the advent of phones with glass backs, the need for a strong and reliable case is pretty clear. Unless you can hide your phone under layers of protective material, it's bound to shatter. Which raises the point of why design the aesthetics of the device if it's eventually going to be hidden. With their gorilla glass, corning did some work in the department but that too seem to be stuck at version 3 which protects your phone in case it slips from your hands. Unless it becomes a standard guideline to use shatterproof material in phones, your phone will break. Here are some stats from a survey I was able to dig up on breaking phones.

[space for infographic]

What do you do, when statistically there is a 45% chance your phone will break? That is too high a number to be comfortable with. Make the smart choice, get a case. Who knows maybe you will also live to see the day, when some issue in an electronic gadget can be rectified just by switching it 'OFF" and back "ON" again.
