Majority of cars have four, six or eight cylinders in them. Each of them has a piston and piston rings that slide up and down to power the car’s wheels. A piston transmits the thrust to the connecting rod and helps in achieving the rotational motion. Its main function is to provide a tight seal through bore and slide freely inside the cylinder. The piston is sufficiently strong to tackle the pressure generated by combustion. It is made of aluminium alloy and sometimes cast iron. As light alloy piston expands more than the cast iron piston so they need more clearances to the bore.To move freely inside the cylinder, a piston must be a fairly loose fit. If the piston is too tightly fit then it will get stuck inside the cylinder in the process of expansion. If it is too loose then it will result in the leakage of pressure. That’s where piston rings come into the picture. For a good sealing fit and to provide less friction resistance between the piston and cylinder, pistons are equipped with piston rings. These piston rings are fitted in the grooves which have been cut in the piston. The piston ring is split from one end which helps it in expansion. There are two piston rings to provide good sealing in a two-stroke engine. However, a four-stroke engine has an extra ring called an oil ring. Piston rings are made of high elastic metals and are made in such a way that they don’t get affected by work heat. This is how the pistons and piston rings work in tandem to drive the engine smoothly.
