So, your tastes have won out and you decorated in darker colours, or perhaps you have a darker room that you don’t want to change. Fair enough, but can you still keep those rooms cooler without switching to a lighter colour scheme. The simple answer is yes, but there are a few ways to reduce the temperatures in your rooms if you can follow a few simple rules to minimise heat absorption through the day.

Firstly, if you have a lot of windows in the room, you’re going to need some window treatments and/or heavy drapes to shelter the room from the sun. Keeping out the rays of the sun is the only way to keep the room cooler during the hottest parts of the day. Of course, ideally, the drapes should be drawn shut when the room is not in use. This will be easy if the house is empty and you’ve gone to work. However, if the room is in use, it may not be possible, but even drawing the drapes a little could still help. The best curtains or drapes for this purpose will have a lighter layer on the outside surface to reflect the sunlight away and out of the room.

Going for a Lighter Colour

If you’ve chosen to embrace the light side, then you can still use a darker colour as an accent wall or floor surface. Just ensure that the majority of the room is decorated in light reflective colours that will prevent heat absorption and keep the room at a comfortable temperature.
