Repainting a Home Could Affect Your Fujitsu Air Conditioning: Perth Expert Advice
Posted: Dec 02, 2018
One of the best aspects to owning your home is that to a large extent you are free to decorate it as you wish. Depending on your budget you can theoretically create any style in any colour that you like. However, you may be surprised to learn that the colours that you choose could affect how your home handles cooling and heating. We always recommend that our customers have a Fujitsu air conditioning service carried out annually and this will help, but your decorating choice will play a part too.
Darker Colours Absorb Heat
When you decorate a room using dark colours, it will absorb radiant energy from the sun. In fact, this could be anywhere from 70-90% of the energy that the room is exposed to. If you have sunshine pouring into a room decorated with dark colours, it will stay warmer for longer after the sun goes down. A lighter colour will reflect heat instead (think of cricket whites), and so there is a very clear choice if you’re serious about maximising your energy efficiency efforts.
Keeping Cool with Darker Colours
So, your tastes have won out and you decorated in darker colours, or perhaps you have a darker room that you don’t want to change. Fair enough, but can you still keep those rooms cooler without switching to a lighter colour scheme. The simple answer is yes, but there are a few ways to reduce the temperatures in your rooms if you can follow a few simple rules to minimise heat absorption through the day.
Firstly, if you have a lot of windows in the room, you’re going to need some window treatments and/or heavy drapes to shelter the room from the sun. Keeping out the rays of the sun is the only way to keep the room cooler during the hottest parts of the day. Of course, ideally, the drapes should be drawn shut when the room is not in use. This will be easy if the house is empty and you’ve gone to work. However, if the room is in use, it may not be possible, but even drawing the drapes a little could still help. The best curtains or drapes for this purpose will have a lighter layer on the outside surface to reflect the sunlight away and out of the room.
Going for a Lighter Colour
If you’ve chosen to embrace the light side, then you can still use a darker colour as an accent wall or floor surface. Just ensure that the majority of the room is decorated in light reflective colours that will prevent heat absorption and keep the room at a comfortable temperature. A Fujitsu AC system will have to work harder to cool down a hotter room, and this will use additional energy.
As an added bonus, rooms that are painted in lighter colours have a higher light reflective value (LRV). This will keep the room feeling brighter for longer as the sun begins to set. You may find that you only need to turn on the lights later than you would normally and this will help to save energy.
