Robotics, the word is used for an electromechanical device which can react according to its environment. Many robots can also make autonomous decisions based on their environment to achieve a certain goal.

Many robots are mobile and to move they need to have motors installed. DC motors are used in mainstream robotics. Robots are programmed to carry out specific actions. Motor controllers are one such component that can be programmed.

The DC motors are the actuators which influence the movement of the device. These converts mechanical energy into the motion of the device. Motors can be equipped with encoders so that a closed loop control system can be used.

When building a mobile robot motors are required. You have many options for motors, these motors include:

  • AC motors
  • Brushed DC motor
  • Brushless DC motor
  • Geared DC motor
  • Servo motor
  • Stepper motor
  • DC linear motor

All these motors are used in the robotics and DC motors are widely used. In a robot powered by DC it is convenient to use a DC motor. The other components in the robot can also utilize the DC power source.

To operate these motors properly you need to use a motor controller. A motor controller is an electronic component that controls the movement of the motor. It acts as an immediate between microcontroller and the motors. The microcontroller provides the control logic.

As we mentioned earlier a widely used type of motor is the DC motor. The brushed DC motor is commonly used in these types of projects. A brushed DC motor uses two brushes to conduct the current. It conducts the current from source to armature. DC motors are available with a wide range of voltages, torque, gear ratios and encoder options.

BasicMicro supplies a large selection of motor controllers for DC motors. You can shop at their online store or buy from a variety or resellers.

We have reached a stage of the development where we can say that using high-end components, motor efficiency and top speed matters in every case. The motion controller can be used as a control unit for brushed motors.

The brushed rely upon a system where brush orientation plays a significant role in determining the current flow to the rotor’s bar segments. In this process the commutator reverses the flow of the current and keeps the motor rotating. The brushed motors wound armature is attached to the center through a magnet and it is supported by the outer ring. As soon as the current flow in coils the brushes contact the commutator and then they system manages the current flow and load.

DC brushed motors are known to provide more power than the AC brushed motors. They also deliver flat torque over a wide speed range. DC motors are easy to use with low cost and have easy controls. That is why these motors are widely used in various industries.
