HOW DOES THE JOLLY PHONICS WORKS

Based on a proven, fun and multi-sensory synthetic phonics method, jolly phonics is a comprehensive program which gets children reading and writing from an early age. It means that they teach letter sounds as opposed to the alphabet itself. All these 42 letter sounds are phonic building blocks which children use to decode the English language with the right set of tools. When one reads a word, they recognize the letters and then blend together the respective sounds, when one writes a word they identify the sounds and then write down the corresponding letters. This process of skills are called blending and segmenting, following are some other skills needed;

1. LEARN THE LETTER SOUNDS

Children are taught the 42 letter sounds which are actually a mix of sounds of alphabets (1 sound -1 letter) and diagraphs which is 1 sound -2 letters such as "sh, then, ai, and use". Using this multi-sensory approach helps one to go for each letter sound as is introduced with stories, songs and fun actions as well. The teaching of the letter sounds is done in 7 groups of 6 letters at a pace of around 4-5 sounds a week.

2. LEARN THE LETTER FORMATION

This process is taught alongside the intro of each letter sound, but typically during the course of the lesson, children will learn how to form the letters and write the letters down.

3. BLEND

Once when the children learn the first few letters, they will automatically begin to blend the sounds together to help them read and write new words.

4. SEGMENT

When children are starting to read the words, they also need to start identifying the phonic components which make the word sound the way it sounds. When one teaches the process of blending and segmenting at the same time, the children also become familiar with assembling and breaking down the sounds within the words itself.

5. TRICKY WORDS

The tricky words are ones with irregular parts, like "who" and "I". Children are taught these as exceptions to the rules of phonics. If one introduces the common tricky words early in the year, it increases their reading fluency of the children.

Jolly phonics training in Mumbai helps children in forming the skills which build their learning of grammar. These courses improve the literacy levels across the schools as well. It is an amazing way to help children learn the letter sounds which helps them pronounce those words. Get in touch for more info on phonics training.
