"Home is where the heart is." - Pliny the Elder

Do you have an outside terrass (patio)? Is it open or enclosed? And, do you live in a place where the winters are long, harsh, and cold? If you have an outside patio attached to your home, and it is open and not enclosed, it is worth considering putting up glass panels to make an extra room.

Why?

By way of answering this question here are several reasons that provide the impetus to enclose your patio:

Increases the size of your home

The quotation mentioned above is the raison d’etre for enclosing your patio with glass panels. Before we look at why, here is a short summary of Pliny the Elder’s life.

Pliny the Elder was a Roman author, naturalist, philosopher and friend of Emperor Vespasian who lived between AD 23–79. He was also an army and naval commander during the early Roman Empire. He wrote a number of books but is the most famous for several quotations, one of which is the quotation mentioned above.

Therefore, it can be concluded that he was well-qualified to offer a discourse on the value of ensuring that your home is beautiful and an environment where you can relax and experience peace, happiness, and tranquillity; all of which are necessary to thrive during the cold and long winters.

Grow green plants and flowers all year round

Your glass-enclosed patio can act as a small greenhouse once the weather cools down until it warms up again. Indoor plants and flowers play a critical role in improving the quality of your life during the cold, inclement weather.

For example:

  • Looking at vibrant colours found in flowers like the African Violet:Incidentally, African Violets are the easiest indoor plants to grow and, they flower all year round. Also, when you look at vibrant colours, it stimulates the release of adrenalin in your brain which in turn boosts your energy levels and
helps you relax.
  • Plants act as natural humidifiers: Artificial heating dries the air out, which in turn dries your skin and nasal passages out, making it uncomfortable to spend long periods indoors during the winter months. Plants, especially ferns, help humidify your home because they release moisture through the pores on the underside of their leaves.

Creates the feeling of space

Enclosing your patio or porch with glass creates the feeling of space because you can see your garden from the terrace. It is easy to feel trapped in small areas during the long winter months when it is too cold to venture outside.

Thus, the glass panels that surround the patio will create the feeling of living in a much larger space than the actual square meterage of your home suggests. In other words, by being able to see outside through the glass panels, it will feel as though your living space is much bigger than it is. Consequently, your mood will improve because you won’t feel trapped anymore.
