Their strengths lie in the expertise they have and their vigilance in keeping an eye on the technological trends. The company continually trains its work team to handle complex tasks so that they can develop appealing websites, complex web systems or custom programming using industry trends and latest technologies. Iflexion supports a complete development process starting from preliminary investigation, requirements specification, architectural design, development, testing and validation to maintenance and support. They base their quality standards on 3Q, that is, quality personnel, quality process and finally quality communication.
I will be working in the IT department and will have the chance of collaboration with the experts in that department to carry out the investigation of the technological and industry trends that will enable us to develop Web solutions that meet the needs of the clients in all industrial applications. It is the place where I will put my knowledge and experience in Dot Net programming into action and also increase my insight in that area so as to appreciate my career as a Dot Net programmer. The IT department has the mission of earning the clients’ trust and confidence via an appealing personal attitude, passion for what they do and a commitment to maintaining a long-lasting relationship with the clients. That mission aligns well with the company mission that entails the delivery of measurable business value as well as helping the customers to adopt and succeed on the Web.
The issue that I will like to solve while working for this company concerns the lack of involvement of the clients in the project development activities. I will ensure that I thoroughly involve clients in the entire process of software development life cycle so as to understand fully their needs and develop applications that will satisfy their needs appropriately. The involvement of all the stakeholders in the project development process is vital to ensuring that there is all the input required for project success. I will also eliminate the old methods of software development life cycle such as waterfall model that the company uses and replace them with more comprehensive ones like agile and prototyping models that actively involve users in the development process.
Methodology
Action Research is the methodology that I will use to conduct my research in Iflexion because of the reasons that I will explain later in this paper. Action Research s the process of conducting an investigation of a practice so as to find better ways of doing. Is also a process of inquiry to find a practical solution to a problem that an organization or an individual may be facing. It involves an interactive inquiry concept to aid in the integration of problem-solving tasks via data collection, analysis and the collaboration of data analysis activities (Winter, 1987). The approach that this methodology provides is a platform for improvement at the personal and corporate levels as people find better ways of performing their duties and responsibilities. The inquiry into the given practice via Action Research results in the identification of mistakes in the way performing actions is taking place and how to solve those mistakes appropriately (Gilmore et al., 1990).
Experts define Action Research as the process of inquiry directed by the people that are conducting the research. It aids the researcher to participate actively in the research process and create a real-life examination of the causes of the problems that are prevalent in their working environments. In the end, the researchers end up discovering the ideal of the expertise and concept of experience in their practice related skills (Greenwood et al., 1993). Action Research provides an assurance that there will be a positive impact on the practitioners’ practices as its repetitive process of action meets their anticipations. It offers the desirable direction towards the goal of achieving the anticipated change through the researchers’ simultaneous collaboration in changing the system. If the researchers have to meet the goal of desirable directional transformation they need to have active interaction with the clients. That is because Action Research emphasizes on co-learning as the fundamental aspect of the inquiry process (Morgan & Raphael, 1983). While the researchers are interacting with the clients and various stakeholders, they can break down reactions.
History of Action Research
Kurt Lewin was a social psychologist, and he was the one that coined the term Action Research’ in about 1944 while conducting research that aimed at promoting social action via democratic decision-making as well as active participation of experts in the research process. Lewin’s target groups were field workers that were trying to improve the relationship between the minority groups in the American society. His belief was that Action Research would help achieve the much needed social change. Most researchers since its inception have been emphasizing the relationship that exists between the research on one hand and action/practice on the other. Rapoport used the ideas of Lewin to conduct research aimed at the development of curriculum while he was working at Deakin University (Meyer, 2006). He said that Action Research was different from other types of research due to its involvement of the researcher in the research process.
The field of education continued to adopt Action Research beginning with the Columbia University in the area of curriculum research as well as collaborative research. In spite of its developing popularity and application, Action Research faced criticism by its effectiveness, practicality in the late 1950s but it re-emerged in the 1970s under the influence of Stenhouse (Reason & Bradbury, 2008). Action Research tries to breach the gap that exists between research and practice as it creates a situation whereby practitioners define research issues and conduct research in a way that the results are directly useful to the researchers. Action Research took over a different rationale that was different from the original one after its re-emergence in the 1970s (Winter, 1989). Schwab, Elliott and Stenhouse’ emphasis shifted to the view of practical deliberation based on human interpretation as well as a detailed description of accounts instead of statistical analysis and measurement. Schon Donald developed a model detailing the reflective practice of Action Research, and that model has been useful especially in the area of education.
Justification of the Methodology
Action Research is the most suitable methodology for my research as an intern in a company named above. That is because this methodology will offer a solid ground for making intensive inquiry into the Dot Net programming and find practical solutions to problems faced by the organization and those I face individually. Its reflective nature makes it be a unique kind of research process because the researcher has to repeat his/actions until they find the desired solution to the problem (Meyer, 2006). That is the reason I will use it as it gives the assurance that I will arrive at practical solutions to all the problems for which I will be conducting research. In that sense, I will improve my skills as a Dot Net programmer and help the organization to improve in that area.
