A Brief Guide: How to Care for Zoo Animals?
Posted: Dec 09, 2018
Organizations that deal with the management of animals in the zoo and wildlife have made it paramount to all zoo owners that the welfare requirements of the animals must be met at all times. Animals they say must be treated just like humans, and in no situation should an animal undergo conditions that are not befitting of a human. This includes their nutrition and housing. When feeding animals, make sure that the hygiene of the food is the same as when you are caring for a human. The housing of the animal must also be well taken care of. Ordinarily, zoo animals are wild animals and should never be found loitering around for both their safety and that of humans. So you must buy zoo mesh to keep the animal restricted to a certain area in the zoo away from where it can be of harm.
Organizations like AZA which stands for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums have made mandates and requirements that must be met by everyone who is in charge of a zoo. A form of accreditation will also be given to every zoo that meets up with this required standards, and that will help people differentiate from standard and substandard zoos. AZA has also made sure that they help in the provision of various sorts of information that will be necessary for making sure that these procedures are adhered to as stated. Guidelines and how to go about the management of animal health are also part of these numerous programs.
Caring for Animals
The context of caring for the animal as stated by AZA is beyond just looking after the animals and enclosing them in stainless steel netting. It means that the animals must have freedom from pain, severe hunger, harsh weather conditions, and predators. Care means that the animals must be able to have positive experiences such as pleasure, excitement, and the ability to perform their activities and behavior that are specific to their species. But in the provision of care to the animal, there may be conflicting situations that have to do with the welfare of the animals. This means that meeting with all of the requirements of AZA may seem to be quite impossible. Examples of these conflicts may include:
- Freedom from disease conflicts with Fear from handling during treatment
- Freedom to express normal behavior conflicts with Distress during normal social interactions
Welfares of the Animals
Three important welfares of animals that must be catered for includes the following:
Physical Status
This simply means that the animals must at all times be in a good physical state. There must be no form of injuries, and the animal must be in a state of healthiness that is known for animals of such species.
Mental Status
The mental status of the animal has to do with the behavior of the animal which must be appropriate at every time. Most zoo animals are subjected to fear which speaks badly of their welfare.
Natural Behavior
This simply has to do with the animal showcasing behavioral attributes and patterns that they are known for. While marking the territory of an animal, make sure that you leave enough land for the animal to roam, as this will make them have a feel of their natural environment. So make sure that you buy zoo mesh sizeable enough to mark animal’s territory.
