  • Odor control: Odor control is another important step in overall wastewater treatment. It is also often the very first step in treating water at plants. For odor control a combination of chemicals are added to the waste water to curb the strong odor of wastewater. This also makes the water prepared for further steps in treatment.

  • Filtering: The next step involved in wastewater treatment is screening for any solid waste that might be added to the water. If we talk about municipal wastewater plants, substances like food waste, plastic material, nappies, clothes are most likely to make their way into water and all of these are filtered out physically to ensure that only water is left at the end of the exercise.

  • Sludge removal: Sludge removal is another important step in wastewater treatment. Filtering does not account for the host of the semi solid waste that makes it way into dirty water and sludge removal takes care of that.

  • Extraction process: A number of gases like Methane, and Bio gas may be synthesized from waste water, and this process involves the extraction of these gases for commercial use.

  • Toxic waste handling: After the completion of all the processes, there might be a large amount of toxic waste which is treated by disinfectants and specific bio hazard chemicals. Most commonly a combination of Chlorine and Sodium hypochlorite is used as a disinfectant to rid the water of germs and viruses.
