Fact: inspiration is universal, and can sometimes emerge from the unlikeliest places. Also fact: fashion is universal to a large portion of the western world, as most countries which constitute what is generally known as the ‘first world’ share the same dress and accessory codes and tropes.

Considering the two statements above, both of which are true, it ought not to be quite so surprising to discover that Brazil is a veritable hotbed for unique engagement ring designers and designers of distinctive-looking jewellery in general. The former Portuguese colony and largest country in South America may forever teeter on the edge dividing the ‘first world’ from the ‘third world’, but it has historically been known to be home to a highly creative and imaginative people, whose penchant for the loud and colourful has traditionally been translated through such mediums as Carnival celebrations and samba music.

The latest outlet through which Brazilian nationals can express this cultural and visual identity is apparently jewellery. The global field has, in recent years, been taken by storm by a bevy of young unique engagement ring designers and jewellers who hail from Brazil, whose collections and offerings are every bit as visually striking as you may have imagined. These jewellers’ missions are made even easier by the fact that Brazil has also traditionally been a source for all sorts of precious gems and metals, which gives these young artisans a large playing field in which to explore their visions.

The path for this new crowd of Brazilian unique engagement ring designers has also partly been paved by the country’s highly protectionist economy, which historically supported endogenous production over foreign imports. This forced Brazilian artisans across all fields to turn their creativity into high gear, eventually producing movements which inspired their future successors and put Brazil’s name on the map as a highly inspired nation.

The current generation of unique engagement ring designers from the land of football seeks to continue these movements started by their predecessors, while giving them their very own spin. Their works are unsurprisingly colourful, bold, irreverent, saucy and even a bit cheeky, as befits the personality of the Brazilian people, and draw inspiration from such diverse sources as the female body and the iconic sights of Rio de Janeiro.

The application of these influences results in absolutely unique pieces, the likes of which are hard to find elsewhere in the world. Brazilian jewellery designers are not concerned with sparkly diamonds on a conservative white-gold base; they want to create something brash, loud and colourful, as their people are known to be. And as anyone who comes into contact with jewels produced by artists from this country will undoubtedly avow, they are nothing if not successful in their mission!
