The Kaftan dress at its simplest can be termed to be an ankle length, long sleeved tunic or robe which buttons or closes in the front. However, this simplicity tends to disguise the varied and long history of kaftan, combined with its dozens of variations and styles across numerous cultures. This dress in the last decade has undergone tremendous change especially with the designers working hard to make it more fashionable. Even western women have taken a special liking for this dress and it does appeal to all moods and tastes due to its adaptability and simplicity. It also adds that touch of exotic or tradition in the wardrobe.

The classic Muslim kaftans

Typically, this dress type has billowing, open sleeves combined with high collar. Modern variations have brought other cuts and V-necks. Few traditional versions come with narrower, tighter sleeves. This however, tends to vary from one region to the other. Ties or buttons can be found on the garment’s front to the waist from the neck region, except pull-over designs. Tunic or sash is over in the waist to provide shape to the flowing tunic. Traditional designs tend to reach down to ankles, although the modern versions could be much shorter. At times, the kaftan inspired tunics are worn as blouses or shirts. A loose outer jacket, cloak or sweater completes traditional kaftan.

Versatility

The greatest virtue of this garment perhaps is its adaptability and versatility to different types of weather conditions. Lounge kaftan is created from light materials, thereby making it perfect to be worn in hot climates. The heavier types are more appropriate for those cooler conditions. This dress is quite loose and worn over the undergarments with ease. They are also flexible and worn under the heavier outerwear. This apparel can be loosened for coolness or held close to body, as desired. Ties or buttons can be buttoned to various heights, depending upon temperature. It is indeed an all-purpose garment that can be worn every day and throughout the year.

Origin

The traditional homeland of the kaftan stretches to Central Asia from North Africa, although its origination is believed to be in Mesopotamian region. It is rather regarded to be an Islamic clothing designed for women. The kaftan in original cultural context is either a man’s item primarily or unisex outfit. This word has been derived from Persian language. Depending upon cultural context, they might have homespun, plain garments or beautiful ornate robes having impressive decorations and patterns. Decorative accessories and elements were used in specific kaftan wearing cultures to indicate status or rank of the wearer. The materials used in its creation range from silk to plain cotton, etc. For example, Moroccan women’s kaftans appeared with fabulous, intricate lace decorations.
