Having a diverse set of products for your toolbox is a necessity. Especially if you do repair works around your house by yourself, you should have firsthand knowledge about the different tools you need for each job, and their specific functions.

Now, when it comes to working with wires, crimping tools are a must-have in your arsenal. These tools are crucial when it comes to joining or connecting two pieces of metal (especially for wires and cables). No other tool can do this job properly.

Also, since crimpers can be both manual and pneumatic, it is best to identify your needs before settling down to purchase one.

Let’s take a deeper look at the tools to help you decide which one is more suitable for you!

What does a crimping tool do?

The main job of a crimping tool is to deform two pieces of metal in a way that they join each other at the point of their deformity. The place where the pieces of metal hold each other is known as the crimp.

A crimper is mostly used when a wire needs to be inserted into a connector. The crimper tightly squeezes the opening of the connector to make room for the wire. A good example of this is a phone or network cable. Both of them use a crimper to join connectors at the end of cables.

How do they work?

Using a crimping tool is pretty simple. At first, both ends of the cable or wires are placed in the connector.

After positioning the wires properly in the connector’s jack, these connector ends are placed inside a crimper. Then, the handles of this crimping tool are pressed tightly into the connector’s plastic. As a result, the crimper punches the connector’s plastic and holds the wires tightly, allowing data transmission through them.

Types of crimping tools:

There are mainly two kinds of tools that you can avail according to your requirements. They are- connector crimping tool and pneumatic ones.

Connector crimpers:

As the name suggests, they primarily help in joining wires and connectors. Typically, connector crimpers are operated manually and look akin to pliers. However, with connector ones, you must be careful of the size you want. Because unless they come with interchangeable dies that can crimp connectors of different sizes, you can only crimp connectors of one specific size!

Pneumatic crimpers:

Pneumatic crimp tools are more convenient when it comes to crimping. They have adjustable pressure and dies that enable you to crimp connectors of any size. Also, a connector crimping tool consumes a lot of time and effort on the worker’s part whereas a pneumatic crimper reduces both substantially.

How to choose the right crimping tool?

Whether you choose to go with manual or pneumatic tools, you must make sure of a few things before making the purchase. The size is the most important thing, especially for manual crimpers since they cannot be adjusted. Also, check for the grasping positions, handle designs and whether they have proper insulation.

So, determine the type of crimpers you need and add them to your toolbox. Make sure to choose a reputed supplier when it comes to purchasing the best quality crimping tools.
