Deodorize Your Evaporative Air Conditioning: Perth Expert Advice
Posted: Dec 27, 2018
If they have evaporative air conditioning Perth based homeowners may notice a foul odor in their system. The damp pads and pump system inside an evaporative AC unit offer excellent cooling, but there can be issues. The foul odor can originate in the moistened pads, which if they are not kept clean, can be a breeding ground for mildew and mould. The last thing you want circulating throughout your home is a bad mildew smell and mould spores to breathe in. This problem isn’t too hard to tackle yourself if you follow these four simple steps.
The Equipment List
Before you get work you will need a few cleaning supplies to carry out the cleaning and deodorizing work on your system, here’s what you will need.
A bucket of clean water.
A pair of rubber gloves.
A face mask.
Some clean soft cloths.
A car cleaning sized sponge.
Some sheets of cheesecloth.
White vinegar.
Tea tree oil.
A favourite fragrant oil (mint is good)
Some clean towels.
Some cotton wool balls.
A good deodorizing product.
Step 1: Get the Evaporative AC System Ready to Clean
Turn the system on and leave it running for a short while. When you return, and you’re ready to start cleaning, turn the system off and open it up. You may notice that the system has accumulated some water during the brief operation and the pads should be damp. Use the towels or cloths and remove all of the water that you can find from inside the unit. Get everything nice and dry before you move to continue.
Step 2: Clean All the Parts and Accessories
The evaporative air conditioning system is comprised of a number of basic parts. The most obvious pieces that you will notice is a tray where most of the water will gather. Given the odours emanating from the unit, this tray is likely to be dirty and covered with an accumulated build up of mould. Use some cloths to wipe away the looser dirt deposits and make up a cleaning solution with the vinegar and water. Clean away the more persistent dirt and mould stains using the sponge or another cloth. Work in the cleaning solution and the vinegar will help to neutralise those foul odors.
Step 3: Fill and Deodorize the System
An evaporative AC system needs moisture in order to work, so now you can add some clean and fresh water to the system. This is a good time to add a few drops of the tea tree oil to remove more bad odors and reduce the bacteria levels. Tea tree is powerful stuff, and it can even prevent mould growth in your system. Then add your favourite fragrant oils, mint and lemon work well to introduce some fresher smells. If you look around you may find some deodorizing products to use that will have a fragrant odor included.
Step 4: Time for a Pad Change
Changing the pads regularly is a great way to prevent a build up of bad odors in the system. You can layer them up with the cheesecloth or cotton wool and dip them in your fragrant oil.
