Posted: May 18, 2014
Wall tiling is a project that demands precision and patience. The more complex rooms and wall shapes ask for extensive cutting so if you face such a dilemma, you already need to call a handyman. Also, if this is your first time to tile, then it is better to start off with an undemanding task.
Materials
- Tiles
- Tile grout
- Tile adhesive
- Tile spacers
- Silicone sealant
Floor vs. Wall Tiling
There is a huge variety of ceramic tiles in the market these days. Of the two, floor tiles are apparently more subjected to more weight and wear when compared to wall tiles. While floor tiling may be used on walls, the opposite may not be done.
Wall tiles are made especially for walls since they are thinner unlike floor tiles which are thicker because they may be baked or vitrified. This process makes floor tiles more damage resistant. Wall tiles, just like floor tiles may be glazed with gloss that has been baked on. This kind of coating is harder on floor tiles, though.
Make sure that you do your homework when buying new Wall tiles. The use of inappropriate tiles can have disastrous effects. Here are some more tips in tiling the walls of your home –
- Check the tile glaze and make sure that it does not have lead content. Double your efforts when you are tiling the walls of your kitchen.
- See of the grouting and adhesives are suitable to the room condition as well as the type of tile that is going to be used.
- Steer clear of narrow strips that are less than 25mm in width. These strips can be very difficult to cut. It is best to plan the rows again and use one less tile together with two wider pieces that have been cut. Do this or slightly increase grouting spaces.
- Seal the joints where sinks, baths and basins meet with the wall tiles. Use a silicone sealant.
- Wipe any excess grout so that it won’t set hard with an unsightly appearance.
- If you have to put tiles on the walls of kitchens or showers, then be sure to use a grout sealer so that stains will be avoided.
- Before breaking a ceramic wall tile, be sure to score the glaze on the edges and the surface. Mark the wall tile where it should be cut then score a line on the tile’s surface.
- Cutting shapes on ceramic tiles must be done with a card template. Be sure to file the edges where the cut had been made.
- Grouting is always the final step of the tiling process. This is the cement that is used to fill the gaps in between tiles. This can either be colored or white.
- Clean any excess adhesive from the tile surface or it will show through after polishing.
- Wait for up to 24 hours before applying the grout to ascertain that the adhesive has surely done its role.
Decorative Mosaic Tiles
Laying out mosaic tiles is pretty much the same with that of ceramic tiles. Just lay out the whole sheet then leave like gaps between the sheets. Cut off strips from this sheet then trim the mesh backing using a sharp utility knife.
Through this simple wall tiling technique, you can create bathroom, kitchen, even a living room or bedroom that looks good for many years. Not only are mosaic tiles decorative, but they can also effectively resist heat, water, steam and stains. They also require very little maintenance. The great news is – there is an endless variety of designs and colors that you can choose from so you will never run out of ideas.
