How To Transfer Your Child To An International School Smoothly
Posted: Jan 25, 2019
The IB Schools Mumbai has have a very definite impression in people’s minds - they are famous for providing the best education and, of course, come at a cost that most parents can’t afford to pay. However, in the past few years, parents have made special efforts to transfer their kids from an ICSE or a CBSE school to an international school so that they can give their children a better future.
Whenever you try to introduce a change into your child’s life, it is important to plan it correctly so as to receive no resistance from them. At their tender age, it is difficult to get uprooted and settle down in a completely new environment. Even though you are not switching cities, transferring them to a new school can be a difficult change for them. Fortunately, there are some ways in which you can prepare them for the change.
The first thing you should do is discuss with your child that you are planning to make the move. Take their opinion on the matter, and if they resist, put forward your reasons. If they respond positively, there is nothing like it!
Secondly, you should show enthusiasm about the shift yourself. Show your child the research you have been doing, and all the effort you are putting into choosing a good school for him/her. Sit right next to them when you google, "international school close to me". This will communicate the message that you are genuinely doing this for their good, and hence, this may cause them to respond positively as well. If you are planning to visit a relative or friend whose child attends an international school, take your child along so that he or she may ask any questions they have.
Thirdly, find out children in your neighbourhood who go to the same school that your child is going to join. Of course, this can only happen after you have finalised on a new school. Encourage your child to interact with those kids, even if it is over a video game. This will help them settle down quickly in the new school once they join that school. If possible, be pally with the parents of the kids who go to your child’s new school. Arrange a dinner party once in a while, or do any social thing together.
If your child is feeling particularly negative about the shift, and you insist on the change, then this is a very delicate matter that you should handle maturely. Judge how comfortable your child is likely to be once the switch is made. It is important that you help your child have a positive outlook and an open mind about the change. Sometimes, a better school may not be worth any lasting damage on your child’s mental health.
In general, there shouldn’t be any problems because international schools are popular for a warm, adapting culture. Children in these schools are taught to be welcoming and empathetic at a very young age, and more often than not, such lessons stick to them in their tender age.
