BIM and PLM: strong complementarity

When we launched our offer combining BIM and PLM that was dedicated to the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector, we wrote an article to underline the complementarity between BIM and PLM. This article and more precisely the complementarity is still valid. In fact, the questions and recurrent exchanges that we have with many actors of the ACS are the best confirmation of this. More and more companies in this sector realize that BIM alone is not enough to guarantee efficient collaboration and management of the project.

The essential roles performed by PLM (Product Life Cycle Management) and BIM (Construction Information Model) in real estate construction and operation projects are well known. However, these two concepts are often studied independently.

BIM and PLM: How do they link with each other?

BIM (Building Information Model) allows IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) to represent a set of structured information about an existing or planned building. Therefore, BIM offers a collaboration platform between the different construction stakeholders. The latter allows interoperability between different business software through IFC.

Consequently, BIM is one of the key building blocks for the collaboration of different stakeholders. However, to ensure good management of the life cycle of the project / building, there is a need for a complementary solution. In fact, BIM covers the life cycle of the building but it does not differ with the management of PLM.

BIM focuses on the functions of visualization, the calculation of properties and the verification of the interactions between the different elements. It does not deal with the management of documents or the control of reports and versions of documents.

PLM formalizes the processes of validation, exchange, modification, etc. whereas the BIM is more like a redundant copy that we try to maintain.

Is there any interest in incorporating BIM and PLM? If so, how?

First, as we said earlier, it is important to properly differentiate BIM and PLM. We must bear in mind that they are two different but complementary principles. This particular complementarity allows a complete management of the infrastructure throughout the project cycle
