Some Of The Types Of Care And Support In The Home That Are Available

As we get older some of us find that we simply cannot do things that we used to think nothing of when we were younger, and the things that we can't do can vary enormously. Some people find walking difficult and this makes getting the shopping a problem for some people and virtually impossible for others. For instance, if you need a walking aid you may still only be able to walk a couple of hundred yards, but the shops are a mile away.

Other people find everyday things such as getting out of bed, getting dressed, getting into and out of the bath, and cooking very difficult. Some people can manage all those but can't get out of the house to go and visit friends at a club, so they can become very lonely relying on nothing but the TV for company.

It is not only old people who have problems. Somebody who is perhaps 20 could have been in a car accident and lost their mobility and become confined to a wheelchair, so it can really happen to anyone. Fortunately, care and support delivery in Bournemouth is available to help in all of these cases and more.

The one thing that all of these people will have in common is that in virtually every case their needs will be different. In most cases, people want to stay in their own homes with their own friends and neighbours about, rather than going into a care home which is the other alternative. The good news is that, in many of these cases a care and support plan can be devised that will provide precisely the help that the individual needs. Home care can include just about everything from a visit once or twice a week just for a chat and a cup of tea to several visits a day to assist with washing, dressing, cooking a meal, and so on. In fact, if you only need a few hours a day of help and your home can have some modifications made to it and some equipment fitted, care in the home may well be the most economic solution.

Of course, this all has to be paid for somehow or other, and how much you will have to contribute will depend on a number of factors. If you have a difficult medical problem or a disability, you may qualify for free NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) or free Continuing Care (CC) if you are under 18. You are more likely to qualify if you have a continuing medical problem rather than just social needs. This is a free package from the NHS and is provided at home, in a care home, in a hospital, or in a hospice.

Your local authority may be able to help with the costs of home care in which case you will need carers, possibly special equipment, and specialist services. The amount of help with the costs you receive will depend on a care needs assessment which assesses your requirements, and a financial assessment which looks at how much you can afford to pay yourself. One of the biggest worries that many people have if they need to move into a care home is that they may have to sell their own home to help pay for the cost. One of the advantages of receiving care in the home is that the value of your home is not taken into account.

Even if you do have to pay some or all of the costs of home care, you may still be able to claim some benefits which are not means tested. These are possible if your health requirements are great enough, and your savings and income are not taken into account. The two benefits are an Attendance Allowance, and Personal Independence Allowance. There may also be other benefits that you could claim which would depend on your circumstances.

Even if you are able to pay for the costs of home care yourself, it is a good idea to arrange for a care needs assessment so that you can find out what sort of care and help is available and what individual care and support you need.
